I've come so close after the front nine, 47, 48, 49, 50. Only to go and blow it on the back nine. I've even come as close as 103.

Now I know this may not seem much to you on here, but I'm relly starting to get ticked off by this milestone.

Everyone, including my pro, reckons that when it happens, 90 will be easily achieved.

What advice do you have? How did you do it? Was it a eureka moment, or just, wow, it's happened.

My ecclectic best is a 73, 3 over par on Scoresaver 2. So I know that I can do it when it all hangs together on the same day.

If you are gettig ticked off by this then you need to put that out of your mind, likewise, put all the golf club and type data out of your head.
Go out with a half set of standard clubs, get a pal to score for you without telling you. ;)
Reduce your swing by 25% and reduce the power you put in by a small amount.Concentrate ONLY on striking the ball and nothing else once you have set up.

Beginners and high h/c players common faults are taking on board too much information/data/techno crap etc and thinking about it, overhitting, head turning because they cannot wait to to see the cockup they have just made, long winded pre shot routines, failure to adjust stance for longer or shorter clubs, lack of focus, fidgiting, talking too much and trying to impress or at least not look silly, all of which has a negative effect. :p

High h/c players and beginners are liken to a non driver given the highway code to read and a drivers hand book and being told they can go out and drive round the streets of London. Some are naturals who just need practice and guidance, some need to learn the grass route basics before filling their heads with too much driver and driving data.

Im not talking about becomming a pro but simply enough to play a decent round of golf below 100.

Try taking a mid iron you favour the most, if you hit consistantly well and can manage 120 to 150 yds you should be able to break 100 with that iron and a putter(unless you 5-putt per hole :D)after all if you took 5 strokes to get to 8 greens and 4 strokes to reach another 8 then 3 to reach a couple of par 3s that leaves you 22 putts.

Makes interesting reading to look at it that way dont you think.
I can assure you that if you came round with me and did as I asked you wouldnt take 100. I introduced my wife to golf and she(complete novice) shot 102 for her first round, if she had listened to me it would have been under 100 but you know what its like telling the wife what to do! :D ;)

I broke 100 about 1.5 years ago. And have been looking to break 80 for the past 4 months....getting closer!!!

This isn't a tip but it's what I thought when playing.

I practiced 3-4 times per week from 50 yards, and just off the green.

Theory obviously being if I can get my 2nd - 3rd shot within 6ft of the pin consistantly the less puts I need to take.

This sounds like an obvious plan now i'm actually writing it down, and i'm sure everyone try's to do this anyway.

However i made a point of spending ALL of my time for about 3 months on this objective alone, (at the time the rest of my game was ok but i still needed to find those extra shots and found that this is where i was loosing them) This has honestly knocked 10 shots off my game. Not consistantly but more often than not so at least I know it can be done.

Keep at it and hope this helps.

Re: Braking 100

Krokodil.

I use the 52 for everything from 100 yards in, and it's generally my strongest club.

Driving is my weakest or most erratic area, though my FIR is better than my h'cap level (SS2 stat).

My advice...

Using a 52 wedge from 100 yards is full of danger, it probably requires a full swing which with your handicap means you are probably thinning and thicking it on occasion. Try different clubs, for example from 100yards, I often use half a 9-iron shot, I have loads more control and make the green on a more regular basis.

Try keeping your driver in the bag for a whole round. I did this when I was on scores between 95-105. I used a 5W from every tee. Ok, so it did not go as far, but I really cut out the penalty shots from the tee. I then spent a lot of time at the range until I was comfortable with my driver. Even now I only use it when it is needed rather than reaching for it automatically.

It may not work for you, but good luck.

I admire your tenacity. Every time I try to shoot over 100, I am fine for 13 odd holes hacking about, but then my concentration goes to pot, and the odd unwanted par creeps in. Suddenly, before you know it, you are in the 90's again.

put the number on the card and only tot up in the clubhouse you dont need to know the score when you playing, learn to hit your pw 100 instead of you 52 with a clean strike the ball will stop,i 3/4 9 iron to 60 degree 99% of the time i learned the hard way that hitting full short irons doesnt do it

Re: Braking 100

I don't often hit the 52 with a full swing, well it doesn't feel like it anyway. Maybe I need a playing lesson with the pro. Or even Herb!

As far as score counting is concerned, I don't tend to add anything up until the front nine is over, and then again at the end of the round. But I do know that if I score an 8 on any one hole, then my chances are scuppered.

I try and play each hole to my h'cap, ie using the SI and h'cap to work out what my par is on each hole, ie. a 3 becomes a 4 etc.

On an average round I'll waste 4 or 5 shots in penalties, 2 duffed of thinned chips, 2 or 3 duffed fairway shots, regardless of club used, have 3 or 4 3 plus putts, have 3 or 4 1 putts, lose on average 3 balls per round....why am I playing this wretched game!!?? But as I've said over 13 rounds I've par'd all but 3 of the holes. Highest ever being 6 in one round, and I still didn't get below 100!!

Thanks all for the advice. I think I'll go driverless this weekend and see what happens.

Re: Braking 100

It's all from 100 yards in is the key as any idiot can get it up and around the green...

If you normally take 4 round the green, try to get down in 1 less - I know it sounds obvious but it works....

The longer the backswing the greater the margin for error....chip or pitch with the club that means you use the shortest backswing that gets you on the green....

Re: Braking 100

Thanks everyone for their contributions and support. I've just re-read all the posts, ready for the medal tomorrow.

Looks like it'll be a tough one, cold, wind and rain. But I've taken in the advice and we'll see how we get on.

Big stick is in the bag at the moment, but will not use it. Though I can't quite bring myself to leaving it at home.
