Yes, hmm, I get a 12 too, which means I need to be only 4 over for the rest. Not easy.

Come on HH, you can play this silly game. Bring it on.

Thanks for the encouragement Murph.

This has been the first bat a ball type game that I've ever struggled with. I used to play squash and table tennis to county level as a pre-teen.

As a footote, I think playing TW 09 on the Wii has helped with course stratergy a bit. You get penalised quite badly when being to ambitious, and as you know, I can be a little ambitious on the golf course!!

Thats just golf. All I'm saying is that the majority of the game is played around the greens and by improving your putting you can turn up and downs on some holes from 3 or even 4 shots per hole to a minimum of 2 and 3 and it is a relatively easy facet to master.

My advice would be to get a putting lesson to get the fundamentals sorted. Once you are standing square, eyes over the ball and holding it properly you can work on the putting at home so that when you get an opportunity to play your putter will be leaving scorch marks on the greens its that hot.

Not taking anything away from today's delight, the real test will come when the course is back to normal conditions. By that I mean the ball rolling normally on drives, approaches, chips and pitches, putting on faster greens(?), higher rough etc etc.

Keep working at it and sooner or later it'll all just click into place.

Imurg. Yeah, I'm kinda aware of that. The very hard ground certainly helped me get some distance on some very badly topped drives, that in summer wouldn't have gone 50 yards. Today they were going 200 along the ground. And I'd be the first to admit that with out that happening on 3 occasions, I wouldn't have broken the 100.

Well done hapless - a good milestone to get past and damn good for it.

But - if I may say - I noticed through your various posts in this thread, a few "negative" self-digs on your part. Forget the "crappness" thoughts. The 4s and 5s show you can do it - next time out you just think to do it a bit more often. Remember inside every 8 there's a 4 waiting to get out.

Hi Midnight. Long time no hear!!

Yep it was East Horton, the Greenwood course.

Basically they're losing the holes over the road / lane, and creating more holes beyond where the 2nd hole ends on the Greenwood course. If that makes any sese to you. Should be open in May. Which is why I guess that we're allowed to play in such conditions as yesterday.

Well done mate. That's the first big hurdle out of the way. Roll the 90.

Just looking at your stats, as Homer says, improvements in your putting would help and even practice at home is valuable.

In addition, if you could work on hitting a few more fairways (don't worry too much about distance) this will set you up for a few more GIR.

Don't worry too much about GIR though as it would seem that the best improvements would come by honing your short game skills i.e. from 100 yds and in down to fringe chips. Your GIR stat could be 0% but if you can pitch/chip and one putt (or two at worst) then you are threatening the big 90.

FWIW, playing off 13, my GIR over the last year is 21% with average putts per round of 32.4. Where I have missed the green my average putts are 1.73 so short game is reasonable but still needs improvement. Where I have hit the green, I averaged 2.05 putts so long putting needs improvement.

Basically, keep the ball in play off the tee, improve the short game including putting and you will soon break that 90 and be setting the next target.

Keep the faith HH

You're absolutely right about this.
I played at The Glen at North Berwick on 31st December and shot a gross 92, nett 71, which was only effectively one over par. Initially, instead of being chuffed to bits about it, I was scolding myself for getting one six, two sevens and an eight. A few days later, I was content that I had played 14 out of 18 holes very well and got nearer to actually playing my handicap than I had for a good few weeks!! :)
