Brazil 2014 WC_England_Press_Hype

A good summing up of your post here Snelly - I think you may be a little out of touch with the feeling towards our national team.

That doesn't stop people supporting them and wishing for the very best though.

I used to love football very much and played to a high standard. However, I stopped playing seriously because of the idiots (supporters and coaches) on the sidelines and have further fallen out of love with the game due to the Premiership: diving, swearing, spitting, cheating, attitude to referees, over-hyped coverage, obsession with money, bling, WAGS, agents, Sky Sports and so on. The whole thing is borderline offensive to me. The championship less so and I go to watch Brighton maybe five times a season which I enjoy.

I will be supporting England at the tournament of course but have very low but realistic expectations. I also hope that France (if they qualify), Holland, Germany and Spain do well. Just because I like these countries and have spent a lot of time in all of them, consider myself a European and enjoy the way that all of them play, especially Spain.

I will also be wishing that Brazil win. For them to do well on home soil would be huge for their country and they have given a lot to football with their style of play and overall influence.

I appreciate fully that this makes me a long way out of kilter with the average England fan.

It is always the same. A couple of half decent results and we are the best national football side in history. It is pathetic drivel, written by bottom feeding morons for a delusional, British footballing public that is as voracious as it is gullible.

Who's claiming to be the best national side in history? We've got at best a very slim chance of wining it. But at least we qualified so obviously we're going to support the team.
At least it gives us an excuse to go to the pub:smirk:

Well said, The press are just pathetic with the weak stories and comments made up from sources! I gave up buying a paper 10 years ago because it was just full of crap!

Speak for yourself. It gives me a chance to get a round of golf in on empty courses. I hope England go all the way so I can get some cheap rounds of golf in ;)

You seem to be very much IN kilter

Cat 1 or better?

Not sure what cat 1 means for football?

Read your blog though and played about the same as you I would guess. Sheffield Wednesday youth team, Sheffield Boys then played for my University and had a couple of (paid) games for Stafford Rangers. Probably consider my football handicap equivalent to be just about breaking in to single figures? Difficult to assess as it is a team game!

I gave up competitive football as some of the opposition bordered on gangs, people having to forgo anything after match to pile into cars and high tail it outta Dodge before the Clantons piled in. What I've seen goes up through the ranks and even into reporters who incite, enrage and manipulate the truth for a story that's nearly always a non story.

Love football, hate the people involved with it and what they do to it.
