Bought an old club today, Who could hit it ?

Isnt it strange peoples idea of "old" I reckon most of the older members of the forum played with si,ilar clobs as those. To me old club had name like mashie niblick.

Bob,

Given that you are in the business of making it easier to play better golf, can you explain why you don't do so for yourself?

Image? Ego? Laziness? Cost?

You don't have a very high opinion of me do you.
The reason I still use them is the one missing from your list..........fun.
Sure, hybrids are easier to use but not as satisfying as hitting a long iron long and straight.
And I don't play for $1m every week.

Nothing wrong with playing older irons, especially in the bladey or players end of the spectrum. Plenty of pros have favourite older heads which they reshaft as needed and keep a set going for years.

Technology just hasn't moved these on as much as drivers. Some players enjoy hitting a butter knife iron purely. I would if I could, but I can't so I don't.

Funny enough, a few weeks ago, I played with some guys who like to play hickory shafted clubs. Genuine 1920s clubs with original head, shaft and grips. I had a few shots, and it is very different from modern equipment, including the effect of a retro golf ball. One of the guys had a round of 2 over gross that he said he probably wouldn't better much with modern equipment. But he had a lot more fun doing it his way.

So a few days ago, I put a WTB ad looking for some old persimmon woods. OK, not hickory, but those of you old enough to remember hitting persimmon with steel shafts will remember how different it was to hitting titanium and graphite. I may look for a 1980s set of Mizunos too, or perhaps a MacGregor Muirfield. I probably won't use them in a medal, but maybe for a fun round or two.

Bob,

Apologies! I had that one on my list - as 'Joy', but my internet link (and entire PC!) is flaky and I hadn't copied that one before losing the post!

Indeed, I can relate to that from my experiences of blades (nothing better than the (non) feel of a well struck long iron blade).

So, hypothetically, would there be there a point at which you'd change? Pro-Ams? Pro events? Pro Tours?

I rarely play in pro events these days but if I do, the only change I make is to take out the 2 iron and put in a Ping Rapture 18 hybrid.

I like the look of them Bob, wouldnt mind trying the 1 iron as a 3 iron is my fav club in the bag anyway. I remember when most of us had a Ping eye2 1 iron in the bag. I still have my Mizuno T zoid pro 2 iron, must get it regripped and have some fun again :whoo:

I am also surprised by Bob using them irons but it also shows the skill he possess.

Merry Christmas

+1 on that!

Should have asked for a go myself but my swing was not at its best when we last played. Will have to get a game organised with Greg and Bob in the new year.

I use to have a Wilson 1 iron (I had Wilson irons at the time) which would work like a charm on the practice ground. Get me on a tight par 4, put it on the tee and it was like a venomous snake in my hand. Didn't last long. I have no issues hitting long irons and with the progress in forgiveness in modern irons I do wonder why some manufacturers dont offer a 1 or 2 iron option as an additional option

I believe it was made for the 1.62" ball, like my Staff Fluid Feel irons - all the heads look small with the 'large' ball in front of them!

You got WS Fluid Feel? Me too :) Love(d) them. Bought mine in 1985 ()at same time as I bought my Macgregor Eye-o-matic persimmons) and only stopped using them about 4 yrs ago (the assistants at the club said they couldn't see how I could hit them - Philistines that they are).

Back to the topic - I have a RAM Golden Ram Tour Grind 1i (as used by Tom Watson I think). I have to admit I struggled to hit it very well - even when I could strike the ball pretty sweetly with my WS FFs. It's not this one - but it's one of these

Bought one of these back in early 90's. Pure ego trip as I was never good enough to be anything like consistent with a 1 iron.
But just once I got it right, 2nd shot on 16 at Coxmoor, Notts. From the saddle on the fairway I stuck it 6 feet from flag. The memory remains to this day.

I've started hitting my blade 3i again after a year of having my head turned by my hybrid. Really these hybrids are seductive but rather flightly young things. Draw you in thinking that they are the best thing you've ever got you hands on. She feels great, comfortable in the grip, nice bit of swing and excellent when you are in the longer stuff. And so you dump your trusty old girl. And this new floozy continues to beguil, until she starts to go a little wayward, a little astray as you become over familiar and a bit less attentive to her needs.

And soon you find that she isn't as responsive to your will and wants as she once was - what was once a relationship made in heaven begins to sour slightly. You don't know what you are doing wrong but despite your exhortartions, promises and attention she here there and everywhere. And then the real problems start as you flit from one to the next - never happy, never quite content - always harking back to the glorious days when you hit it off with your first hybrid. So eventually you go back to the old girl. Confess your sins and admit that you have been unfaithful and have had your head turned too often by these new young. What you need it consistency, trust - you admit you like it straight down the middle - even if the feeling isn't always that great - and you understand and can admit that you just can't hit it off perfectly all the time.

But you know, you just know, that when the time is right, the conditions are right and the unknowning undefinables are with you - the two of you will hit it off like young lovers on a first date. You will stand there just for a moment with a surge of pleasure running through you from hands to toes to the top of your head - you know you've hit the old girl - lovely Miss Threeiron - in the sweet spot - and she knows it - and you know it. And the world is beautiful.

I'll away lie down now.

I think there are a couple of those old irons living in the loft from the Missus's dad. I keep meaning to take them to the range to remind me why they live in the loft.
