Bogey Competitions

Recently I have played a couple of Bogey comps, and found it a tough format. Would be interested in how other people approach the game. I have tended to play my normal game and play each hole on its merits as per strokeplay, but didnt get me anywhere, so for the 2nd comp I adopted an attacking game, really went for it, after all on a par 4 without a stroke a 5 is the same as a 7 or 8 its a loss.
The attack by the scruff of the neck worked and I came 3rd, also gave me food for thought of really attacking certain holes all the time now....risk and reward...the way forward

It is basically matchplay, so you can attack it like that. The course always plays to net par, so you know what you have to do to beat it.

It should suit me, as I tend to par 8 in a row, and then get an 11, but last time I played bogey, the course gave me a hard lesson.

The last time I played a bogey competition I had to keep explaining to my companions that they should see it as a match against a competitor who would always score a par. It did not seem to sink in.

Played in the society's bogey competition last month, and won it.
I had played the format a couple of times before, though not in competition, I didn't really think about format until quite late in the game. (I had a poor start anyway, 3 down after five, but got to 1 up after nine). It wasn't until I royally screwed up the tee shot and 'recovery' on 17 (at that point 4 up) that I even thought about protecting the score. Didn't matter though as I lost that hole, put my careful tee-shot on 18 oob and finished 2 up and winning on countback.

Its an unusual format and one I'd like to see more of. We have an annual bogey competition (gold letter event) but I've never had a great showing. Mind you looking back I've always treated more of a strokeplay event and so a more agressve and shackle free approach may be reawarding. Food for thought

Playing in a Bogey Comp on Sunday for the over 50's and really looking forward to it. Playing off a h/c of 26 it really gives me a good chance of doing something decent.

My problem is my inconsistancy, good for 14 holes in a round but suffer horribly on the other 4 holes. Played 10 holes on Tuesday night using this format and came off all square, although it should have been better as I had a penalty shot (in the water) on a hole I had 2 shots on, and only ended up with a half.

I was thinking of taking it easy on the holes I only get 1 shot on, but attacking the eight (yes 8) where I get 2 shots on. Do you guys think that would be a good statagy.

We have a foursomes 5 club bogey once a year. It is the most hated format ever, and attracts a record low entry every time.

Could be worse though, it could be mixed foursomes 5 club bogey.

I used to love this format. Sadly, we don't have it at mine.
Best played off over 18 i.m.o.
Trouble is with it, sooner or later, you hit a loose shot and realise a "safe" bogey is a waste of time on a hole with no stroke, so you then get ahead of yourself and start going for broke.

It really is a great format - specially for the odd occasion when you are playing on your own. It concentrates the mind knowing that your opponent (the course) will never drop a shot nor get a birdie.

it's also a great way to rid yourself of a 'numbers' fixation. really concentrates the mind on playing each hole.
