Awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, personally I think it's great, lots of his songs are certainly poems.

What are other people's opinions?

I'm a huge Dylan fan of many years now and I'm delighted to see this award made as his songs/poetry defined an era, questioned a society and still resonate today. My only problem is the 'inspiration' he often directly lifted from early American folk songs, dust bowl ballads, Woodie G et al - having said that, if anyone was going to bring these together I'm not sure anyone could have done a better job and with such integrity.

My ex-wife used to play Dylan continuously. As a lit prize, yes the lyrics tell a story. But oh, its music to hang yourself by.

The purists are aghast, when his name was mentioned as the winner you would think he was a fascist, racist, woman beating thug.
But it is for literature not for book writing, and quite frankly I know of some of his songs. Some of the other literature winners, I have never heard of them never mind the Rammel they have written. A deserved winner.

Worthy winner I think, even though I'm not a particular fan of the his style of singing, his lyrics are really really good and he's been covered by so many with Hendrix's version of All Along the Watchtower my fave. Adele's version of make you feel my love is the best thing she's recorded too imo.

Masters of War is terrific writing, pure poetry - story builds and so apt for these times, last 2 verses summing up his feelings on warmongers I like -

..Let me ask you one question
Is your money that good?
Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could?
I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul

And I hope that you die
And your death'll come soon
I will follow your casket
By the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I'll stand o'er your grave
'Til I'm sure that you're dead...

Heartily agree with this!

I'm a massive admirer of Dylan, his social commentary on numerous, difficult and controversial issues, for over 50 years, ranks him as one of the greatest, most incisive and most prolific literary greats of all time. The fact he expresses his writing through music increases its impact, breaks borders, challenges ideas, upholds principles and ultimately helps to spread understanding across a wider range of people than it would if it were simply written in books.

A great decision to award him the prize. He's influenced millions upon millions of people on Earth because of the words he's written and sung.

Incredible man.

Up there with the finest of songwriters, saw him live many years ago at the NEC.

Actually, after hearing his voice live I'm not sure I wanted to go on living

At School our Headmaster played 'Blowing in the Wind' to us at Assembly. We were all a bit confused as to him playing a modern 'Pop' song as it wasn't really his style. He then explained the meaning of the song and the poignancy of the words "The answer my Friend is Blowing in the Wind' It brought home to us youngsters what apartheid was all about.
