Ancestry (and other genealogy websites)

My sister has been the one in the family heavily interested in this but could only go back so far (my dads dad who disappeared totally) after trying several websites.

One of the things that upset us was one of the things she found out indirectly which she should have kept to herself rather than telling the rest of us.
Spurs season ticket holder? 😁

Flippin eck it could be a long post.
Missis T. Her dad’s dad, grandad had a dalian en with a lady in Naples during the war. She had a son.
Missis Ts grandad died in 1947 in a coal mining accident the year after he was demobbed. He never saw his son. He apparently had ambitions to go back to Italy as he loved the Italian lady. He never saw her again.
18 year after the son was born he sent a letter to the UK asking to see his father. He never knew he had died.
Said son then got married. He had a daughter. A couple
Of years ago, missis T managed to track her down. It was a bit emotional. I keep badgering Missis T that we should go over and see them. Maybe one day.
My grandad on me dads side. He had a son out of wedlock with another woman which was born the month after he married.
I found out last year but did not tell My dad I knew. I don’t think he knew. This was done through an ancestry.
My sis rand gang me and said ā€œ did you know me grandad had a girl with another womanā€. I said ā€œ yes and No, I knew he had a kid but not what sexā€. I told my sis ā€œ but I haven’t told me dadā€. She said ā€œ I haveā€.
I honestly don’t know why. Me dad had Dementia, Alzheimer’s etc etc and what purpose does it bring. Me mum broke her neck to tell me but me dad was quite narked about it. The thing is that dad’s half sister passed away in the late 70,s. She had a daughter who is a. Complete stranger to him.
Ancestry is good but it don’t always have happy endings and a lot of people do the research that other family members have already done.
Knowing that my X times relative once had a castle to keep the Welsh out of England ( true) or Robert Clifford of Clifford tower in York murdered Jews don’t mean a great deal to me today.
Good luck me man. To some it is interesting, to others I have seen them struggle to stay awake when it is mentioned.

This is exactly what I have just said.
Not sure who it was but there was an ancestry show on telly. One of the women on it had African heritage and knew her ancestors were involved in slavery. It turned out her relative was employed by slave traders to police and beat the slaves. Bottom line, to do the dirty work. She was in floods of tears when she was told.

I’m currently signed up on Ancestry to look into my wife’s family history. Been pretty good so far and had some knots untangled. Not so useful for my own family as it doesn’t hold the same depth of record as such as Scotland’s People…I’ve used that in the past and will do so again as still got plenty to do.

My cousin has investigated our family history in depth to see if she could prove what has been passed down through generations…that through our shared grandfather we are direct descendants of Rob Roy MacGregor. She has got very close but was unable (as yet) to find the final link. She’s got to a MacGregor girl who could well be a daughter of Rob Roy. Intriguing.
