Not good to see people with limited knowledge on how dealerships work making completely stupid claims. We have a duty of care to our customers to carry out a VHC & report items to you as the owner of the car. The guys doing the reporting are paid to try and upswell these items to you. That's their job! It is also a standard of having the franchise to also carry out these checks and report them with prices for replacement parts. Not doing so could well cause the R.O big issues from the manufacturer. Again, you aren't obliged to accept these prices, everybody has a choice. However, playing devils advocate, if your car was in an accident and somebody said, if your tyres/brakes weren't worn so much, you would have stopped. Would you be happy if the garage never did their checks and told you?

Of course you didn't here the phone call I received.
Why should someone try to upsell me when its not what I asked to be done.
This is where dealerships obviously get their bad reputation.
This guy is obviously on commission then for upselling.

The problem as I see it is he went straight in for the £1600 pounds for all the wrongs on the car to be carried out when I only asked for 2 things to be considered.

Funny thing is they are all at it.
The report never mentioned my front brake disc that Halfords actually say need changing so who's right there then.

As I said to the guy who was smartly dressed if he went to a shop to get a new suit only and the salesperson came out with socks, shirt, tie and braces I can guarantee he would say he never asked for all the extras.

The report he did was free and I accept that but to try it on that I would want it all done without giving me the price for the work I wanted carried out first was the wrong way to go.
If he had quoted me for the work I wanted done then pointed out the faults that needed doing I could have made an informed decision.

Main dealers have a reputation as rip off merchants because everyone know it can be purchased cheaper elsewhere.

I have limited knowledge of cars but im far from stupid when it comes to dealing with people.

Probably can once the works done.
Do you think they would give me the solution to the problem then take the business elsewhere,I doubt that.

No but didn't you previously take your business elsewhere and they couldn't fix it?

Yes but they couldn't identify the problem hence going to the main dealer.

Im happy that its getting fixed and im not overly bothered about the £500 quid I am peeved about how the guy went about his business.

I get it, at least deal with the 2 issues first rather than attack with the sales pitch.

I'd certainly insist on some paperwork to say exactly what was wrong and what part was changed.

Having spent a fortune in main dealers in the past, I did have a good experience at Range Rover recently. Took it in for service and was hit for new discs and pads, but it's not like you can really argue, but obviously was not chuffed. Went to collect my car and the service lady says we will need you to bring it back in a couple of weeks because it needs a new doofurrywhatnot rear suspension thingy. It costs £1700, and it could have been left for a while, but as your warranty is about to run out in the next few weeks and we have diagnosed it, it won't cost you anything.
I have to say I am very happy with that and it makes a nice change. I can't think of another dealer that wouldn't have left it until the warranty expired, but I may be wrong.

So what are the stupid claims being made? That we as customers are being ripped off by main dealers and treated as dripping roasts and fools? It might work for fleet business but it doesn't for private individuals who have a choice.
My brother in law works as a senior tester and a Land Rover dealership and quite freely admits theres a difference between what is safe and what the customers are told, my recent experience of Mini confirmed that so you'll excuse me if i consider your post to be the result of total corporate indoctrination. Give me a decent independent any day of the week particularly when the car is out of warranty.

For the last 20 or so years I've always taken my motors to local, specialist independents. Far cheaper, better service and you get transparency on what is being done and by when.

Which independant do you use and is it in Godalming?
I've found a great guy, who's very reasonably priced, who operates from Godalming if you're looking for another one!
