BMW 420d Gran Coupe

Tried the BMW 420d for an hour over lunch. I had low expectations, being an Audi terrorist for nearly 20 years, but I grudgingly admit it was very nice. Way smoother ride than expected, slick gear change but a noisier engine than the A6.

I expected to confirm the Audi order but now...

I'm another advocate for the 2.0D engine. I have had it in 3 cars now, all 3 series saloons (now 4 series)

A very very good engine and a lovely place to sit, they do need some extras though, my best one was a 320ED with leather, nav etc...

I put a bunch of miles on an A6 last year, as you know it's an armchair on wheels. Great for long journeys. That said, it's absolutely no fun at all. Large car that's front wheel drive?! That's crazy to me. On roundabouts you have to wait all day for it to roll over before you can get back on the gas. The switch layout is like the engineer opend the door, chucked all the buttons in, done.

The BMW will be a little smaller but more refined/more plain. Idrive is awesome. Rear wheel drive but 2.0d might be dull.

What engine size can you have the A6 in and do you need the bigger car? Not that the 420 is small...

Both 2.0d. I like the size of the boot on the A6 for the trolley and clubs, and I do some 500+ mile journeys a few times a year.

Think I'll go for the BM. I fancy something different...

And looking at the Grand Coup pics, it's pretty big too.
