Anyone got one?

I have a choice between that or an Audi A6, with bells and whistles. I've had 4 A6's and never been let down but fancy a change. Will the BMW beat it?

In a word, no!

I haven't got one but have driven both and the Audi wins every time over a BMW.
Having said that, you're either a BMW man or not. I just think an Audi is class through and through.

But yer a lucky man to have the choice!

BMW 530D is by far the best car I have ever owned or driven - it was superb

Having said that - I would choose the Audi in this instance v the 420D Coupe - engine is too small in that BMW

If it was the 3.0LD then the answer would be different

My Bro in law drives a 420 M sport .. swears by it.. I prefer an Audi but unlike me he has no kids and usually drives solo and still in his 30s. So horses for courses..

Not driven the GT Brian but in August I tested the A5 against the 4 series and the A5 was the much better for build and equipment per £.
That said, I ended up with a C43 Coupe instead. Far more car for the money IMO.

Mmm, I've had an A5 and was disappointed. If the A5 trumps the 420 I guess I'll go for the A6. Shame really as I've never had a BM and fancied a change.

I have had 4 BMW's and 1 Audi. I think BMW are a world ahead of Audi and would not want another. If I could afford an RS6, I would still go for an M4 or an E55.

The main reason is the technology and ergonomics. BMW design is a long way ahead of Audi in my view.

Additionally, I have had BMW's with the 2.0d engine and it is a miracle of engineering. My 5 series touring returned about 45mpg and could still do 0-60 in 8 seconds. Amazing engine.

BMW's are absolutely brilliant in my opinion. Audi - distinctly average by comparison.

Another BMW advocate here. Not going to knock Audi at all, they're very, very good but the driving experience of a BMW does it for me every time. Agree with Snelly that the 2.0d engine is a masterpiece - it goes in so many models across the range and really is a 'master of almost all trades'.

Agree 100% with this. I've had 2 Beemers and 2 Audis. Had very expensive issues with both Audis (2x auto gearboxes in a brand new A4 (£4k each time) and a new DSG control unit and a porous cyclinder head in an A3 both were £2k repairs) Both Beemers were trouble free.

The rear wheel driving experience is also streets ahead of the front wheel Audi, you need to go up to a quattro to match it.

I'm currently driving a Mini Cooper SD which has the 2.0L BMW engine in it and it pulls like a train! I left a Focus ST220 for dead the other day ( OK so it's been chipped to 210BHP  )

IMO, it really depends on what you want the car for! Not really sure just what the purpose of the 4.. GT is, nor how successfully the purpose is fulfilled! BM's X6 is, imo, the daftest car ever and the 4..GT might be a similar 'worst combo'!

That said, the 4 series seems to be my ideal size BM - not cramped like the 3, decently roomy but still with the feel of a medium sized car. The 5 series, like the A6 is a 'big' car. There's more boot space in Audis anyway, so there'll be lots more in the A6 over the standard 4 series. There'd need to be some pretty spectacular design to get the GT up to A6 capacity, but it might not be practical. If there's only 2 of you the rear of the Audi provides plenty of 'luggage space' not included in 'specs'.

I found Audi diesels very noisy (clicky) compared to BM ones that I've been a passenger in! Very noticeable outside, but certainly rather 'clattery' inside as well! Audi seats were more comfortable - for me! Haven't experienced the BM IDrive interface (nor Audi's equivalent if there is one) but heard it's a bit quirky! Generally unimpressed with some of BM's 'unique' features as it seems to be these, if anything, that go wrong! Audi's Quattro is great - certainly a big plus over RWD in greasy/slippery conditions! Don't be swayed by the 'driving machine' bull-dust advertising! What that really means is that you have to concentrate on what the back end is doing/could do too much for my liking - making B/Country road driving (or even exiting M25 onto A21!!) tiresome!

Both solid cars that will sit well on the road. If you are really determined to get the most appropriate one - for you - the only way to really tell is to make a list of your priorities and mark each as to how each seems to rate! Or you could just follow your whim and get the Beemer 'because you feel like trying one out'! Disappointed to hear you were unimpressed with the A5. That would be my ideal size/shape - certainly my favourite looking recent model from either manufacturer! Also consider whether you get more for your (company) money (probably as 'free extras) from Audi after the recent fuel consumption scandal!

Does your keyboard have a full stop on it or just an exclamation mark?!

I have a 2011 1 series coupe and its a great car. Never missed a beat and very good economically.

My dad had an A5 and had a good few issues with it which were luckily covered by warranty.

Any option of getting a test drive in them both? Its most likely down to personal preference and you find they feel. I would expect them both to be very well built cars

Are you blind? I counted 8 Full Stops - vs 13 Exclamation Marks. Pretty reasonable for an 'opinion' I think!

PS Full gamut in that paragraph!

I think forum rules limit you to a max of 3 exclamation marks per post

I've had a couple of BMWs (fast and not) and a couple of Audi's (fast and not). I've preferred the owning experience of Audi, and (IMO) the interiors are far classier. But the BMWs have been better looking and far better handling.

Nice decision to have. Drive both, only you can decide if you like the feel.

Interesting. Shall I take the Lambo or the Aston? The Ferrari or the McLaren? Great choice to have. :D

Personally, I'm in the Audi corner. I've had a remapped BMW 535d a few years ago and it was great to eat the miles up, rapidly quick in a straight line but just dull to drive, if I'm being honest. It was the same with the 330d I had. The interior was OK, slightly on the bland side. Had a few issues with the 330d too. At the same time as the 535d, I had an Audi A4 saloon. Better interior for me and a more interesting drive.

Current car is an A6 Avant Ultra 2.0 litre diesel. I chose it because it looks so much better than the BMWs IMHO. Years ago, it was the reverse, but not now. Great inside and lovely outside. For me it's a great drive, pokey at 8.5s 0-60 and returns over 50mpg with respectful driving.
