Blade or Mallet?

Either. Always used a heel/toe weighted, like my Scotty Circa 62 No2 or my Studio select newport 1.5. However, I tried a RedX at the start of the summer, and I can't stop using it. The Studio gives the best roll, and the best feel, but the RedX holes more putts, especially in the tricky 4 to 6 foot bracket.

I've tried both but have tended to use mostly mallets recently.

As a kid I always wanted a classic Ping Anser, because that's what all the pros seemed to use. Sadly it didn't seem to work for me. Then had a lovely Maxfil Tad Moore blade. Felt great but not very forgiving. Trouble on the short ones resulted in me trying a Zebra mallet, success! Then got an Odyssey Rossie which has pretty much stayed in the bag for the last 10 years. I recently got a Ping Piper that I use over the winter as it looks similar but doesn't have an insert. Seems better on bumpy greens.

As much as the shape, I think it's the fact that the mallets are face balanced, which seems to suit my stroke better.

I will be trying a blade again next year though as I blew all my birthday money on a Scotty Newport 2.5 which has so far only been used on the carpet.

I'm not a fan of the new type "mallets" with all the bits and bobs (TM spider, Ping Craz-E etc). That just puts me off.

I tend to keep my old putters (wish I had kept the Anser) just in case I want to try them again (they seem to have very little trade in value anyway), and occasionally I do. Does anyone one else keep their old ones too?

Interesting.

I regularly see people here bang on about custom fitting for drivers and irons, yet noone has mentioned it in this thread.

You should get yourself on a SAM machine and have your stroke analysed. That way you will see which kind of putter actually suits your stroke and will end up with a putter that does the job for you.

I have a Scotty circa 62 no3 it's the only putter I have bonded with. Spent a quiet afternoon with the pro at my old golf club getting it shortened and re weighted and have no intended intention of changing :-)

surefire, have you tried this SAM machine? Is it the one using lasers and high speed cameras?

Had my Scotty c/f for lie and length but otherwise, like most on here it seems, I have used trial and error with putters, on the basis that if it works, it works.

If you tried the SAM did it confirm your own thoughts about your stroke or did it surprise you? What did you choose as a result? Would be intrested to know more.

Anyone else on the forum tried it?

Cheers

Yes, I have tried it.

Yes, it uses lasers and cameras.

It actually surprised me a bit. I was fit on it a few years ago, and ended up with a Scotty Newport which I have been using ever since with no problems.

The interesting thing was that prior to this, I had always been using mallet putters, as I liked how they looked. Through the fitting process, it came to light that the face balanced Newport ended up more square at impact than any other putter I tried, and produced the most consistent rhythm (measured, not just some feeling I had).

The other thing was that on a relatively short flat artificial putting green, I was holing lots of putts with all styles of putter, yet the machine was saying my stroke was a load of rubbish.
When moving out onto a real green, with longer undulating putts, the best results coincided with what the machine said was a good stroke, and vice versa for the misses.

The lesson here is that a putter that you can hole everything with on the shops artificial indoor green, still may not really fit you, but it won't show up until you have parted ways with your money.

is classed as. I don't own it yet. But it will be mine by Christmas.

It's a mallet in MHO. Very similar to my Scotty. I've always had this style, I used to have a TPA18. I've never be able to get on with anser-style - even though I've tried many times.

Mallet, or rather face-balanced for me, just see to hole more putts with a face-balanced putter, but I then do struggle more with distance.

Currently have a Odyssey #5 tour in my bad, but it does alternate with a Sabertooth.

This is a blade no doubt about it

It is a mini mallet. Something like a Red X or Odyssey 2 ball is a mallet. An 8802 or Napa is ablade, in my book.

Thats only in my book though, but if I ever see someone calling G15 blades because everyone else has a set of rescue woods I might have to do something about it.

Thanks surefire that is interesting. As you say you don't see it promoted or talked about much and certainly not as much as the trackman, etc custom fitting gear for other clubs.

I am kinda stuck at the moment, my callie is great on long putts put pants on short within 10 foot and the opposite with my Sabertooth. Was thinking of the CS ping pick em up or the scotty 2.6 but then again a mid mallet might be ideal.

No problem.

I think this is a reflection of the fact that despite putting making up nearly half the shots taken, people get far more excited over 300 yard drives, or 15 more yards, so its easier to sell a fitting service in this area.

After struggling with alignment and distance control this spring I opted for a Rosas inza mallet. When the greens were slow it was awesome, but come the quick summer greens the delicate 3 foot putts were a nightmare, I've now gone back to a yes amy blade and my putting stats are the best they have ever been (dispite some questionable putts today)

Before I had the inza I wax prone to stabbing putts, the inza helped develope a smooth putting stroke and now I'm back on a blade I wouldn't change
