Money List Winner
Played my 1st 18 in a long time (couple of months) on Saturday at the club where I held my first membership. (Belton Woods in Lincolnshire)
Bit of a Nostalgia trip, and I wouldn't have played it normally as it used to be in terrible condition, but my uncle informed me that it was "unrecognisable" and they'd done alot of work to get it up to scratch.
I'm not really sure what he was talking about as it seemed to be in the exact same condition as it was 7 years ago with the exception of the greens. They were of championship standard. They were ridiculously quick and very, very true. It was a joy to putt on them and I usually don't enjoy putting as I'm so bad at it but I only had one (I think) 3 putt all day.
Anyway, bit of a nightmare round, but a few positives to be taken I suppose. Ended up with a nightmare 52 on the front 9 - but I think alot of this was down to worrying about the groups coming up behind us and holding people up. I was playing with my girlfriend's brother who I've never played with and who hasn't been playing very long, and his mate, who plays off 14. There was a group of two behind who I waved through on the first. They didn't understand, so we let them through on the second...except it took them about 15 minutes to complete the hole (it's a par 3)...so we just carried on and managed to get a nice cushion and I settled down a bit after that.
Couldn't tame my Driver and I think I hit about 2 drives all day that I was pleased with. Iron shots were "safe" all day aside from a few, but I did stiff one in to about 10 ft from 150 yards over a massive water hazard to an extremely tight pin at the front of the green on the 10th. I was rather pleased with that.
The thing I was most pleased with was my bunker play. I'm usually terrible out of bunkers and managed to hit 3 greenside bunkers in the first 4 holes and played some pretty awesome shots to end up with nothing more than a bogey on all of them.
The shot I was most disappointed with was my second on the 470 yard par 5 18th. I pushed my drive right into the rough and didn't think I would have a shot to get it on in two but I had a favourable lie and about 170 to the green. It was a tough call as the green is surrounded by water but I thought "F**k it" and decided to go for it. I could NOT have hit a better shot....save for the fact I pulled it left and it ended up in the water! Absolutely gutted. Dropped a ball and hit the exact same shot, but this time got it on the money. Dropped it to within 15ish from the hole and had a tricky two putt to end up with a 44 coming in. I was so angry with myself. But that's golf I suppose!
Off out for 9 tonight to try and get some rhythm and consistency back in my swing before Saturday when I'm (hopefully) playing 18. (No car though, so relying on people being available for me to get there!!)
