As title says. Why?. These divots are not trenches but a very good foot long. I am sure I am hitting ground before ball. Is it coz swing to steep and standing too close. Cheers all

A foot long seems a tad steep but is fine on a wet parkland. Try that on my links and youll snap your wrist.

does the divot start before the ball?

But these divots are reducing distance thats what makes me believe its ground before ball.

Yes, well, before the ball will cause problems. :(

However, I go through patches of taking quite big divots with short clubs, and if I've caught it nice, it'll actually go further I reckon.

If you are hitting the desired target, why worry?

I am not that is the problem. Short distance to green ie 120 yards and shorter. What I think are easy wedges I end up with long divots and leave it short. Hence the original question. Why am I getting these long divots.

Sounds like you're hitting just behind the ball, getting the turf first then collecting the ball.
And if the bounce of your clubs is too low then the leading edge will dig in.

I'm sure someone knows how to remedy this - I don't, because I know nothing of golf swings......
