Well the course is closed so I've had some time on my hands to think of my first post. So this is what I have come up with. What is the best value course you have played which was also a hidden gem? Value must be less than £30.

I have a few suggestions:

Goswick, played in their open in 2009 for the princely sum of £15. However I'm not sure this should count as this price isn't available all the time. Nonethe less a great course designed by James Braid

Aberdour, £29 for a round and a main meal, excellent value and some great holes. Only a couple of wern't memorable. I think Del B had a picture of the first in a recent post-memorable first holes.

Whitekirk, £20 via 241. Great holes up, down and round hills and rocks. Good views across the Forth as well.

Stranraer, £28 though I played it at a society outing so was a bit cheaper. The last course designed by James Braid, you really have think your way round the course.

But the winner is Dunstanburgh Castle for the princely sum of £12.50 via 241. Simply superb value for a James Braid course. Great greens and a real variety of holes and shots required.

Anyway I would recomend them all. What is your value/hidden gem course?

Most courses around here charge less than £30.00 for a round at this time of the year. In the last month I've played Gullane #2 £24, Gullane #3 £22, St Andrews Eden £22, Leven Links £24.50 (Including two course meal) Ladybank £25 and Scotscraig £25. All were on full greens although preferred lies were in operation at Ladybank. Tomorrow I am playing St Andrews Jubilee £25. :D

i dont know how you boys in the north can play golf in the wind i cant think of anything worse 2 spoil a round, however if you ever decide 2 venture south you have 2 try ilfracombes course on the north devon coast, amazing views, superbly kept course, nearly always dry and only 12.50 this time of year,no mats either, fantastic value and great food

Winter Deals

Cruden Bay £30
Machrihanish £25
Prestwick St Nicholas £20(midweek)
West Kilbride £25

Many bargains to be found if you have a wee hunt.

On the face of it I'd have said Lydd. £25 at weekends including a full English. However having played it with some of the guys from here earlier in the year not quite the bargain it seemed. The 1st was OK as was 3-6, the par 3 10th and 17 and 18. Other than that a soulless place with no character. On a busy Saturday morning with supposedly a club competition on (and it was dry and relatively warm) there were about twenty cars in the car park and I thin kwe saw four groups all day. Beware that not all offers will be as good as they seem

On the plus side anyone down south should take up Smiffys suggestion of Tyrrels Wood as its a tight and testing course where brain is better than brawn. Of the pay and plays, check out Downshire near Wokingham which is always in good knick and pretty cheap

Ethan,Silloth is a nice enough track but has a fair few blind and poor holes.Anyone looking for value come to Goswick £20 winter fee and I am pretty sure you can actually get on in the summer after 3pm for only £17....superb value for such a great track, the Open regional qualifying wasn't taken away from Silloth and awarded to Goswick for no reason... :p

I was a member at Silloth for 5 or 6 years. Blind shots are a traditional part of links golf. I don't think there are too many poor holes there. There many be other reasons Open qual moved,

Silloth looks good with a tidy clubhouse. Homer looked at Tyrells Wood again and had a bit of a shock at the annual fee of £1200! Hope that's not the going rate for all clubs near the M25?

I've played St Nick's and West Kilbride and would take West Kilbride over St Nicks as the middle section is a but bland.Just my opinion though and can't really complain at £20.

I can't speak for all of them but I know Leatherhead (where HTL is/was) is pretty steep. Mine is £1300 (including £50 bar levy and £60 large locker hire) but compared to Mill Ride, Foxhills, Wentworth, even Windlesham it isn't the most expensive. Maidenhead near me is about £150 a year cheaper but £1000 + is the average unless you join a pay and play. I'm not sure what offer Smiffy had but the price he got makes it good value for the quality of the course.

Does the three day ticket at St Andrews count? As many rounds as you like on all courses except the Old for £145. (2 a day for three days works out at less that £25 a pop!) It's worth playing the Old & the Jubilee for that sort of money...

I guess thats why we all like different things in life! I find the first 7 holes at West Kilbride very very boring. It picks up about the 8th and doesnt really get going till the 11th where the course comes alive.

Wow that is pricey for a membership. I'd reckon a decent course up here is £600 to 700 a year.

St Andrews ticket counts, but I'd be knackered playing 2 rounds a day consecutively. On society outings we play 2 games on one day and the old calves are complaining at night.

Mmmmmm. The first 3 at St Nicks are good but once across the road there are three good holes the 6th,7th and 8th and then its downhill 'till you go back across the road. Mind you the 16th is a bugger and I've yet to finish it in par.
