Best "resort" courses?

Enjoyed my stay at the Grove and the service in the hotel and the dining room was top notch and the food was wonderful. I loved the service at the golf course and on the range too but I'm not a huge fan of the course itself. I was very impressed with the Forest of Arden too and St Pierre. Ashbury Manor is a fun place to go but the courses aren't great but for a weekend or few days with mates it has everything you need on one site which is ideal

Looking to play a few course in the new year where you have two days play and an overnight stay. Do most these resorts have any handicap restrictions as I haven't got one from my new club and hardly play there anymore.

What about Trevose? It has lodges onsite. Top 100 course, I think it should be rated about 215 in the top 100 personally

Thorpeness.

Comfortable hotel and terrific old-fashioned heathland course.

Another mention for Thorpeness from me. The whole village is like going back in time.

The course had alterations made a few years ago, which has increased the challenge . The hotel is really friendly and some of the golfing breaks are not just for their own course, but also include Aldeburgh, which is a couple of miles down the road.

I am playing FP with a society in March. Most of the guys are 24+ hc, have they bitten off more than they can chew if its a bit tight?

Just be sensible off the tee. Good venue but perhaps be prepared to leave the driver in the bag if it is being naughty as the rattle of trees gets a little trying by the end of the round. Accuracy rather than distance is the key. Not a long course.

I enjoyed the whole experience at St Pierre this year, played both courses with dinner, and B&B, the accommodation was excellent, the food was very good, I sampled some of the breakfast but was struggling slightly after a late night. Very well looked after and catered for.

The ones advertised by golf breaks and your golf travel usually don't as they are mostly catering for the mates having a weekend break type market and wont want to restrict the potential audience. Not sure how it works for places like Turnberry which yourgolftravel advertises, but the majority of courses that require such things wont wand the riff raff that use golfbreaks coming along;). I think of the 8 of us that are going next year to Forest Pines only 1 has an official handicap.

It's been a few years Steve, what have they changed?

The changes that have been made do not change the character of what was a James Braid design.

They have made changes to the bunkering with the addition of fairway bunkers and introduced more heather, including on the face of some bunkers . This has enhanced the heathland "feel" of the course.

They have also enhanced the swales and hollows around the greens, which means approach shots need to be more accurate.

The course is longer as there is now a new tee on the 12th .

The course was always a pleasant course to play and still is , but it is now more of a challenge to score well.

I took HID there for her 40th birthday. Excellent long weekend, just a shame she doesn't play golf otherwise she could have joined me on the course over the three days.
