Hi guys, next month I will be going down to Bristol to see my sister, can you nice people recommend a good course down that way? I can travel up to 30 miles away from the city, and I am looking to spend up to £40 for a round, many thanks!

There's plenty for that budget.

Brooksey is probably the best guy to speak to about it. I've not played many of them, but would highly recommend my old place, Thornbury. It's about 20 minutes from bristol (about 15 miles, if that), and for £22 quid of whatever they charge now, it's a really enjoyable golf course with some good views of the Severn Valley. It's pretty wide open, but there's a few holes which you have to think about and some with some good risk/reward.

Depending on when it is, and how many rounds you're planning on doing, you're more than welcome for a round at my place up in Gloucester. £15 for member's guests and although it's not the greatest course in the world, it's challenging, tiring (due to the hills) but has some stunning views and rewards good play.

Hi deke, id recommend either the players or kendleshire however if playing kendleshire you will have to book well in advance and it will be a slow round 4 1/2 hours+ and the course is played alot so quite a few divots but it is a awesome course (try to play the original 18 and not the new9 as the new 9 isnt as good.

I recently played clevedon and found that to be a brilliant course, really enjoyed it and has brilliant views.

Other ones to try are long ashton (excellent course with brilliant greens probably best in area).

If your happy to drive the distance and cross the bridge id also give st pierre the old course a go which is in chepstow.

Hope that helps :)

My knowledge of courses in that area is limited but the Players is not too bad, can be very long and challenging if you play from some of the further back tees. Also Cumberwell Park is supposed to be OK and so is Clevedon You also have the option of nipping across the bridge in Wales, quite a few courses in the Cardiff area that might be worth checking out.

Thank you all for your kind replies! I have a good few to check out on the web now,Aztecs thanks a bunch for for your offer, depending on how long I am staying I might take you up on it,cheers! Ta chaps!

Oh i completly forget! My home course chipping sodbury is also a cracking course and the course is really starting to look good, everytime i go up there its getting better and better so another option for you to look at.

I haven't played the players or kendalshire but both get good reports but I can recommend chipping sodbury a very nice course one I have travelled down from York to play in open comp last 2 years.

There's also burnham and Berrow not too far away.

Burnham - tough Links course, can be a little unfair.
Weston Super Mare - easy walking Links course, good track.
Long Ashton - lovely course, normally great greens but played a few weeks ago and not at tip top best.
Bristol & Clifton - just over road from LA and pretty similar, usually in great nick
Knowle - another great little track usually immaculate
Filton - not a favourite
Henbury - no likey but another in good nick
Shirehampton - quite quirky, couple of fantastic par 4s
Kendleshire - very nice.
Players - great facility but Can be a a bit of a featureless slog
Chopping Sodbury - always good nick

Have to disagree about The Players being a featureless slog. I have been a member there for just over a year having been at The Park (Wick nr Bristol) for over 20 years. Not sure that a course that has water on 10 of the 18 holes can be featureless. Yes it can play tough because it's not short, but I wouldn't say it's overly long. The greens are quick & tricky & the course has 5 par 3's, 5 par 5's & 8 par 4's so has a bit of variety. It holds a europro event there each year so it's a good challenge.

I also like The Kendleshire, Long Ashton, Saltford & Kingsdown. They would be my picks. Hope you have a good day.

I think your being very kind indeed to Weston Super Mare Golf Club. A truly flat, dull and boring links and the only course i know where you have to walk through a caravan park to play 2 holes (5&6)

For a good , cheap knock. Try Brean Golf Club. Closer to Bristol, you have The Bristol Golf Club, Tall Pines. All good value for money. If Cash is no object, Then you have The Kendleshire, Cumberwell Park and Celtic Manor, Just over the bridge.

Thanks a bunch lads for your detailed replies. I didn't know there were so many decent courses in the Bristol area,I might have to stay longer and visit more often! Cheers.

I wouldn't bother with my ex club Tracey Park. The crown course is a great layout & the Cromwell is a decent test, but the condition is never great hence that's why I left after 20 years. I would avoid Tall Pines as well.

I wouldn't actually disagree with Robobum, I think it is a featureless slog.

Having played there twice there is no doubting that the facilty is very good indeed and the course is very well presented, but apart from the Par3 10th over water and possibly the 3rd, I do not rate it that highly IMO.
