Best course in Bristol area?

Aztecs:

What are the nearest courses to Gluocester?

Or between Gloucester and Worcester?

Staying at Cheltenham Chase Hotel early June.At moment unsure if I will be able to get a game in (family commitments etc )

Cheers

Kev

There's a few round here;

Painswick is probably the closest to the Cheltenham Chase hotel in Brockworth. There's also Cotswold Hills which is a members club so difficult to get a game (and pricey) and Lilleybrook which are both 10-15 minutes drive in the other direction to Painswick. Not played Lilleybrook yet, but I hear it's nice. Hoping to get a game at some point as a mate of mine is a member.

There's my place (Gloucester Golf Club), which is £15 for member's guests if you want a game. There's also Brickhampton Court which is 10 minutes drive from the hotel, but is a dull, relatively flat course and isn't worth the green fee IMO. It's always in decent nick, but I'd sooner play my place which isn't in as good nick, but has a lot more interesting holes (IMO, Robo ;))

There there's Minchinhampton and the like up in the wolds which are a bit more of a drive out, but are considered the "better" courses in the area.

Plenty of choice though. Let me know if you need any more help.

Ross on Wye! A mini Wentworth, I love it. Members are all 100+ so it's nearly always dead quiet!!

Aztec, is it true that your new driving range can be seen from space?? ;)

Brick is a hole, avoid....it'll be like concrete with this nice weather too

:D

Glad we agree on something with Brick though. I played it in "winter" but it was a nice day and I was totally unimpressed with the course. The highlight of the day was the birdie I made on the 1st hole.

I really must get out to Ross on Wye as I've heard nothing but good things.

You should pop down to Gloucester to see if it's improved at all since you last played it (although you'll probably be playing it in a club match at some point I suspect). As I've mentioned in other threads, the quality of the course is improving each time I go back now that the greenkeepers actually have a budget to work with! It'll be a year or two until it's "really" good, but it's getting there slowly!

Only course I have played remotely in the area is Cleeve Hill. My opening drive hit a sheep.
Love Cleeve, if only they could carry out "proper" green keeping there. Restrictions galore because of National Trust etc. Great par 3s

Appreciate the offer Aztecs, but I just can't do it though, condition could be great, but I just don't like the majority of holes!!:(........the 2nd is okay!!!! ;) haha

Moved to Marlborough GC now so don't have to go there for a league match. You are very welcome, as is anyone else, to come to Marlborough for a knock.

you should defo get that game at lilleybrook always in nice condition and decnt course for 12 holes 13-16 bit iffy and mountain goat feeling sets in bit like your 11th! nice couple to finish too. Like cotswold hills though members club and all that!!!

I played Marlborough quite a bit when I used to live down there. Had a mate who was a member and we used to have a few works do's there too. Also used to play it in the Wilts league. Lovely course with some nice elevation changes. Clubhouse was odd looking but it was nice up on the veranda with a pint. I seem to remember years ago a guy had 2 hole in ones consequetively or he had a hole in one and his mate followed him in, on the par 3 up the hill towards the clubhouse near the end I think.

:D I really don't mind the climb now. Good cardio work out. And the views at the top make it worth it. Good news is, no one plays the back 9 unless it's a comp, it would seem, so whenever I'm up there it's like millionaires golf! It's brilliant.

I wouldn't actually disagree with Robobum, I think it is a featureless slog.

Having played there twice there is no doubting that the facilty is very good indeed and the course is very well presented, but apart from the Par3 10th over water and possibly the 3rd, I do not rate it that highly IMO.

This is no problem, but I play there every week & disagree with you. Featureless to me is no flat, no bunkers, no shaping in the fairway, no water features, no views, no thought given to the layout. I respect your opinion, but disagree it's featureless.

I must admit that I have really enjoyed all the contributions in this thread, some quality posts indeed, thanks again forum!

Cheers for all that help appreciate it a lot

Just to throw another course near Bristol into the mix Mendip Springs is nice. 5 par 5's and quite a bit of water make it a good test.

I also played Weston last Sunday and the greens are superb! The caravan park is no more (it's been bought by a local guy who hated it) so, whilst you still have to walk through the area that it used to occupy, it is now a lawned area with a walkway.
