Best and Worst services in Britain?

Killington Lake, just south of Tebay on the M6 is very pleasant. Similar in tone to Tebay but quieter, Tebay has become too popular.

I think I have blanked the bad ones on the whole but I had a bad experience trying to get out of the car park at Wetherby, bad design meaning it took us about 40 minutes, so I will not stop there again.
Had a similar problem at Wetherby, the car park was gridlocked when I stopped around 18 months ago.

I seldom use motorways now when travelling over the border. When I'm heading south I will use the A68 as most drivers follow sat navs and cram the motorways.

I avoid services anyway unless it’s really desperate 😂

I trust you also realise that they are there to make the roads/journeys safer - both for you and others! So don't shirk on stops just because the food may be expensive and/or low quality!

Limes cafe on the A 614 near Bilsthorpe does a glorious full English and a mean mug of Rosie 👍

I tend to try and avoid eating at services where possible. Quick nature break, maybe a coffee but in and out. Has the standard of services really improved in the last 20 years?
No its crap. Imagine an airport that has your pants down. Service station is the same.

Yes, definitely. If nothing else the introduction of Costa, Greggs, M & S, McDonald's etc has brought consistency to them. Add in a big improvement in the regular cafes in there, the bathroom facilities, the cleanliness. Much, much better than 20 years ago. Still not perfect, still too expensive but an improved product.

Stick with McDonalds, they charge the same price regardless of location, Burger King on the other hand :eek:

I will definitely agree regarding toilet facilities. Must have been in most of the ones on the way north when I use to go away with Fulham and some of them back then were awful. Truly grim. While there is more choice these days, I agree with pauldj42 why can't they all charge like McDonalds regardless of location

McDonalds in the UK are franchises and part of the agreement is the price promise.
BK and other franchises don’t put that constraint on.

There are services up near the Scottish border, independent, and a bit off the motorway, that are really nice. Can't remember the name though! A nice long slip road, where you can open up and have a bit of a blast.

A key issue is the govt, I believe it is them, charge huge amounts for the existence of each service area. Owners have to get that back, leading to higher rents and so higher prices.

One of the annoying things is that no doubt there are plenty of great places to stop just off the motorway but we don't know they exist. If you do a route regularly it is worth coming off a junction to see what is around but for most journeys you have to suck it up and use the services.

Dont know if ave mentioned but am in Bournemouth. 🤔anyway called in at a services on the way down. Missis T fancied a coffee at Costa. Two coffees and two cakes £12 😳 cough fekin splutter. Even wi Missis Ts £5 off voucher the coffee tasted bitter. Another thing ave noticed is the further south ave come. The more EU workers ave seen. Am sure south England would be screwed for a cuppa coffee if it wasnt for the foreigners making it. 😁

The new services at Gloucester south are something different and a template of what they can be. Not cheap but everything is good quality. The shopping provides top quality local produce and the overall experience is excellent.
