I travel a fair bit for work and use motorway services a fair bit.

Best for me is

Gloucester South on the M5. Similar to Tebay (farm services) where there are green areas and the food is very very good. I look forward to a stop there.

For me the worst is

Thurrock on the M25 near the Dartford crossing.
Looks like a prison from the outside and isn’t much better inside. Just depressing.

What else we got

Tebay up in the lakes on the M6 is usually a pleasant stop. Most of the rest are pretty much similar, serve a purpose but don't tempt me to stop any longer than necessary.

Killington Lake, just south of Tebay on the M6 is very pleasant. Similar in tone to Tebay but quieter, Tebay has become too popular.

I think I have blanked the bad ones on the whole but I had a bad experience trying to get out of the car park at Wetherby, bad design meaning it took us about 40 minutes, so I will not stop there again.

Pain to get into with the roadworks at the moment but has a decent selection of eateries

Yeah, definitely a pain to get to, but once you get there it's a more than decent selection. One of the few service stations on the journey from Manchester to Suffolk where you can grab a burrito. M6 Toll services are decent as well, the new place LEON is really good.

Clackett Lane (M25) is a dump and would benefit from some US "friendly fire"
the services on the M2, take away your belts and shoe laces upon entry as it's so depressing.
Cobham (m25) isn't too bad but its always stupidly busy.

Good
The new [refurbished] one on the M5 between Worcs and Glos.
The one on the M6 toll road
Tebay northbound, spent a memorable couple of hours there in a blizzard, 4'' of snow fell in about 30 mins.

Worst
The one near Carlisle travelling north on the M6.
Newbury … nothing bad but it is just too busy
Scotch Corner.

The county cricketer Chris Nash does an amusing 'guess the services' thing on his twitter feed during the season. One of the more light hearted threads on Twitter.

have stopped at Wetherby loads of times, never noticed any issues with the car park, and am struggling to imagine how it could take you 40 minutes to get out of it:D

Tebay is much better than the usual.... also The "Hog and Hedge" on the A30 just past Okehampton... spotless and decent food at decent prices (for services!) Can even take the hound into the cafe too!

Most the the rest are revolting. Basic hygene skills absent from many customers doesnt help... and £3million for a coffee is a bit off too! :)

It was bizarre. If you imagine going in, we parked down the left hand side, way down near to the end of the aisle. The place was rammed and as we tried to leave the problem was getting in to the flow of the traffic. It seemed to be endless junctions and the row I was in never seemed to be in that flow. It was ridiculous, perhaps a freak moment, but I was scarred by it .

Came to mention Leon on the M6Toll, really nice and a pleasant alternative to the usual fast food offerings.
