Being Forced to Mark Your Ball on the Green

You beat me to it. This includes your playing partner in a pairs comp.

But as we have now been fully advised - if a pair you are playing with in a four ball group, or are playing against in a 4BBB match - ask for it to be marked and lifted - then you have to lift it - whether your own partner wants it left or not.

I think the whole terminology of the thread is wrong, if your pp asks you to mark the ball then you must no one is forcing you to do anything other than adhere to the rules which I would imagine is what everyone wants.

Yes I know. My post was an addendum to that. Its not just your opponents...

Wrong way round. I'm knocking the bloke for not marking, not the person who asked for it to be done. Why wouldn't he just mark? I don't get it. That side of things, I can't work people out. Why create animosity?

If the ball was nowhere near the hole and the bloke was being pedantic I would raise an eyebrow but do it, as raised on a recent thread, but this is clearly to make waves. Not why I play the game.

Same, I mark my ball whenever I'm on the green it's just something you just do isn't it? Like you I can't understand why people put themself in that situation.

I only mark my ball if its either dirty or in someone's way. I can't be bothered with all the faff. Tee it up, hit it however many times you need and then pick it out of the hole.

Ditto. Frequently play an entire BB match without marking it once.
However, if appropriate I won't need to be asked...

Can a playing partner or opponent ask for a ball on the green to be marked at any point or only when everyone is on or close to the green? For example if I tee off first on a Par 3 and put my tee shot 1ft behind the pin can I be asked to walk up to the green to mark my ball before anyone else tees off?

Decision 22/3

Q.

A's ball is on the putting green. B's ball is 100 yards from the green. B requests A to lift his ball under Rule 22-2 as it might interfere with his (B's) play. This happens several times during the round. Is such procedure permissible?

A.

Rule 22 is intended to cover situations where there is a reasonable possibility that one ball might assist or interfere with another ball. If the Rule is being abused, as in this case, the Committee would be justified in penalising B for undue delay (Rule 6-7).
