How's everybody doing ? Recently picked up my clubs again after an 8 year absence from the game and i'm addicted all over again. Decided that now i'm going to be a regular player i want to upgrade my gear... Has anybody got any tips, what kind of irons should i be looking at ? New Driver ? New Putter ? Don't want to spend a fortune just yet but some advice would be really appreciated...

Thanks everybody...

James

Welcome to the forum james, and more importantly welcome back to the dark side-frustration, elation, the good shots, the bad shots, the lucky shots-What a game we are all addicted to!

Be interesting to here the sort of standard you were when you quit-will probably help to decide what sort of kit your looking at.

There’s some good straight forward information and ratings on the equipment part of this site which may help. if your looking at something mid price but good quality the brands Benross and MD golf spring to mind- i think there's some good stuff in the mid price range at the minute and i think its definitely worth trying anything before you buy it though-regardless of the price!

Alright Paul, i was and always have been playing at the beginner level to tell you the truth. Definitley nowhere near handicap standard. I have broken the magical 100 mark just the once when i was 17 but i lost the time for the game soon after.

I was really looking for something very forgiving and easy to play. I've never been a great hitter of the driver, usually relied on my long irons off the tee so again a driver i can hit regularly. I've had countless tips from friends about which irons to buy and drivers and such stuff, my head is spinning to tell you the truth...

Yeah i bet-there's so much available at the minute- a lot of good stuff but a lot of garbage to go with it! If you used to hit long irons a lot in the past you should definitely try one of the many Utility clubs around now:

http://www.golf-monthly.com/equipment/Utility_review_index_530.html

They are so much more forgiving than long irons and can be hit from an array of lies-you'll find hitting long shots easier than ever with one of these bad boys!!

And try out a mallet putter: Makes it easier to get the ball rolling across the green than with an old school blade.

there are some top quality budget price brands out there who make good gear - check out the likes of Benross, MD Golf, Hippo and Ram

Thanks for all this help fellas, this is good stuff. I'm glad you mentioned the Utility clubs because i can't quite get my head around em. Where do you play them ? Off the tee ? The fairway ? Are they just a rescue club ? I'm going to be replacing my irons pretty soon, should i not bother buying the 3 and 4 iron and just go for a utility with a 21 degree face ? Sorry for the stupid questions lads...

Had a go with a mates Nike SQ at the range last night, that is unreal. 460 cc with the 13 degree face, every shot a winner. How do i convince the wife i can spend £180 on a driver ???

Cheers

James

James - I am a recent convert to utility clubs and as far as I can work out, 'hybrids', 'utilities' and 'rescues' are basically the same thing. They are great off the tee but I find them best out of semi-rough where in the past I would have been tempted to use a 5 or 3-wood. The smaller head cuts throught the grass easier and mine has an iron-length shaft which makes it really playable. I can get about 195 yards out of it – a fantastic option if you've just missed the short stuff!

You don't need to. I bought an MX-700 for £99 and there's plenty of other bargains out there.
