Why should they?
Would you sell your home if 'progress' demanded it? Why is 'progress' more important than the wishes of an individual? Why is Donald Trump more important than the residents of the area?
What would you consider to be a reasonable settlement for having to move when you don't really want to? Market value +20%? +50%?

Just setting some bait.
If the field out the back of our house was being used for something and the developers came knocking, Id be leafing through the property mags and finding a nice big house that I wanted to live in, point at it and say "buy me that house and keep the oil tank and fridge full for a couple of years thanks". Its not the money to me, Id rather find somewhere as homely and comfortable than move out then worry about what to buy.
