I've heard that Channel 4 are taking over the coverage of the Grand National as the BBC no longer wants to invest the money into bidding for it. I'm guessing that leaves just the Royal Meeting as their only horse racing. Whilst I'm glad such an iconic sporting event remains available on terrestrial TV, I thought part of the BBC charter was to provide full and balanced schedules. Sport seems to fall a long way short of meeting that criteria.

I strongly fancy Sky to poach Wimbledon the next time the contract is up and to be honest if they do it the same way they do other sports and providing the LTA actually use the huge increase in revenue to put in place some top class coaching and practice facilities perhaps in a decades time we can have more than one good player at a time.

So what next. Will BBC eventually sell out sport altogether except perhaps for those they are "obliged" to show like the World Cup final etc. Wonder what the hundreds of presenters and back room staff that seem to manage to wrangle a trip to big events will do instead.

i remember when bbc lost the deal for the premier league highlights a few years back what a lash up that was! Was so glad when MOTD returned!
Im not fussed at the moment as i have sky sports etc but if the price keeps going up it might have to fall by the way side then i really will feel like im missing out.

pretty sure the Royal meeting and the derby have gone too, basically the Beeb have washed their hands completely of horse racing

do you think it was a concious desicion to do away with horse racing due to its controversial issues it raises with regard to animal rights people when a horse dies?
I know footy is contoversial but that holds a bigger revenue for them???

i dont find it controvesial just thought i would add that

Wimbledon and the 6 Nations have recently been renewed so safe for a bit but people should be braced for a BBC with no sport. First of all, most sports are a minority interest when you look at a national level and so it is not actually within the BBCs brief to prioritise it. More importantly though, the BBC just cannot afford it any more. Sport demands more money and the BBC has limited finances. Unless you want to double or treble the licence fee then the BBC just cannot afford to bid for sport and keep up with its other obligations. Equally, the BBC simply does not deserve to have these sporting events. It expects other people to finance and support the week in, week out events and then get the Crown Jewels for a pittance. Take golf, Sky shows every event every week and so deserves to show all of the majors. Simple fact is that within the next decade all sport will be on dedicated sports channels.

I was talking to a very good mate of mine whose connected in the Racing game and this he what he emailed me yesterday when we were talking about it.

This was brought up in that restaurant I was in last week and one of the people ,told a story as to what you are up against with the BBC.

He said there was woman in the meeting and when they were discussing Epsom and how to make it more meatier to the viewer she comes out with

"You see these short 1 minute races(5f) cant we put some of those little fences at every furlong pole.Surely that will make it more exciting"

With stories like this no wonder the been are losing their sports coverage.

The biggest problem i see is the people who are putting the tender package together just don't have the passion to deliver this great sport and would rather waste money on producing another talent show trying to outdo the xfactor than keep the likes of Royal Ascot, The Derby and The Grand National.

Hope the Open is next to go then Alliss can put his slippers on and kick back with a horlicks.

Suspect that it will not be long, with Sky pumoing money into the European Tour every week it is only a matter of time before they have exclusive coverage of their numebr 1 Tournament in the same way that I suspect that The Masters will soon be exclusive on Sky. After all, Sky is not going to attract any more subscribers for events that can be seen on other channels.

Frankly, having been a tennis player before playing golf HJS you're peeing in the wind mate. The LTA already makes enough money from wimbledon to unearth as many players as you could ever want and the facilities at the top level are totally top notch. Its just that the people who run tennis are completely incompetant. As for Murray, as far as I can recall didn't evolve through the tennis "system" it was down to his parents the he got where he is.

Add that to the fact that most schools and councils have done away with tennis courts as too costly to build, run and maintain you stand no chance of a young "street fighter" taking up tennis, it will just be the preserve of the children of current adults who play

The money from Wimbledon will still be wasted!

Best place for it Imo,channel four have got better presenters for starters.
BBC have the likes of John Parrot and that massive sidekick, think hes called Gary.
A major difference will be the adverts.
Channel 4s coverage of the festival this year was brilliant.

I think the BBC's sports coverage has deteriorated and not a patch on Sky. Whether that's lack of investment and.or simply lack of experience now they hardly cover any live sport.

Irritates me to have to pay Sky though who are a dreadful organisation to deal with and if not for the sports package I probably wouldn't bother.

I don't have sky. As I have issues with Murdock. Can't stand the bloke and what he stands for. Ever since I refused to read the sun paper many years ago, for its "football game coverage". I have never had anything to do with any of his companies. So sounds like no sport on TV for me soon.

i'm sure that there are certain sporting events which by law have to be shown on free to air tv. I'd seen the list when it was most recently published and the major british sporting events such as wimbledon, the open and the grand national must be shown on free to air and hence have not already been tendered away by sky.

There will always be some sport shown on terrestrial tv.

I`m very dissapointed that the BBC have given up so many sporting event,I believe once they used to show 30 days a year of golf and now we just have the Masters at reduced coverage and the Open which is very well covered but for how much longer? on top of that the crickets gone and now reduced coverage of the F1 season.I personally think the Olympics must have cost the BBC a fortune and they are simply trying to recoup some cash back, its not good thou for those of us that like our sports and dont have sky.Just another thing does that mean that my TV licence should be reduced now that i`m not getting what I used ,yeah right  .

I am still mourning the loss of scrambling from the 'box' of a Saturday afternoon... Not to mention the rallycross... Heady days of sports coverage... Grandstand with David Coleman on the Beeb... Dickie Davis bringing us the World of Sport on t'other side... Who could forget the wrestling with Kent Walton on the mic'...
