BBC Coverage of Wentworth

I grew up with the BBC coverage in the 80's like all the sports it covered then, it was the best in the world (same for cricket, rugby, football, racing etc). Sadly it seems the licence payers fee is best spent on these trailers for each show and these logos at several million a pop. BBC coverage is a poor reflection these days. I think as much as I enjoy Allis's ramblings and Ken Brown's on course insights, Cotta is persona non descript and I'd rather Allis spent more time describing the action.

I like the Sky coverage. Yes the ad breaks are frustrating but I'd rather have Roe being contentious than Cotta getting woodworm in his backside from fence sitting. I think Sky have taken the coverage on again for this generation as Allis did for me. Their camera work is much better and as a rule their commentary team and panel (Roe excepted) are pretty on the money

when I hear that BBC Golf intro music I get goosebumps, and to hear the soft knowledgable voice of Peter Allis is comforting as well as informative and humerous, the mans a legend and I could listen to him for hours.

Most memorable quote I remember was at the Troon Open when he was watching Craig Sadler waddle up the fairway in a howling wind and he quipped "look at that, trousers.........full of legs"

same good points pro and con here...

the amount of investment sky have poured into all their sports puts then ahead in my books. what really highlighted it for me today was the shot played through the 8 foot gap in the trees by Donald. being a geek, i'd slowed it down a few times to watch and rewatch his set up, see if can pick up any tips. anyhow, when i do that on sky you get frame by frame hd and can see the ball flight crystal clear. BBC was all blurry and ill defined. in fact the HD was generally below par.

anyways just my thoughts....found Allis very very irratating

I've never had Sky so can't comment on the programme quality.

What I can categorically state though is that I refuse to pay a monthly fee to watch a TV channel and then be subject to adverts too.

Sky's model is wrong as far as I'm concerned. Either charge for the service or fund it with adverts - not both.

Eh? And the BBC licence model is? :D

BBC coverage is fine, but is limited to around two golf events per year, whereas Sky have an event pretty much each week, whether it's PGA, European Tour, LPGA, Nationwide and even some amateur stuff. Plus docu-magazines taking us behind the scenes. Then there's the new shootout golf next week...

For a golf and sports enthusiast there is no comparison.

Have to agree BBC today was rubbish. Started late because the F1 over ran because of a crash. Then we had that bloody blonde telling us that Seve had died. Shock, that happened a few weeks ago. Then we had to sit through 20 minutes of some suit talking about changing the european logo. Why? gives a [****] about a logo. just get on with todays golf coverage. Oh they DID. but they showed 20minutes of what really didnt matter, Then finaly they got to the LIVE stuff. Yeah right. If you were on the internet they wernt live as the laederboard on the web site was 2-3 holes infront of the coverage.
Sorry but I have to go with SKY from now on. Allis has lost the plot.............

I'm watching it and no complaints whatever.
Give me the BBC coverage over SKY anyday and I was brought up listening to Peter Allis so not everyone likes the new breed.

I was brought up listening to Henry Longhurst.

Peter Alliss must have a backside full of splinters,he clearly hates the course alterations at Wentworth, but won't actually say as much.He keeps making comments about the alterations as if they've been made by a third party.

Peter Alliss' idea of an analysis of a putt. "It's all about getting the line right and if the speed is good ..."

Yeah no f***ing s**t Sherlock. The only thing he knows about putting is that he couldn't do it.

He is way past his sell-by-date and is an embarrassment to any professional journalist. All the players hate him but the BBC can't get rid of him because the blue rinse brigade would put down their tea and biscuits and write to their MP.

It's like people saying how good James Hunt was as an analyst alongside Murray Walker. Go and listen to some of the historical GP archive pieces on the BBC and you realise he was pants too.

Well, the BBC coverage seems to have the thumbs up from the forum overall..... Must be OK then.

As far as I'm concerned most commentators (on any sport) talk inanne b*llocks most of the time. Meaningless stats usually to support a meaningless comment about someone or other. Personally, I feel that Peter Allis has spent most of his lifetime doing this and has more or less perfected the art and (maybe you have to be a certain age) is entertaining to listen to. Ken Brown is just great.

Remember, we tune in to see the golf, not to listen to has beens spouting opinions left right and centre. BBC is free to air. I probably get the licence fee back from the website and news bulletins alone. The adverts on sky irritate the hell out of me. You can't even channel hop properly as half the channels seem to be on an ad break at any particular point in time. Give me BBC sports coverage (any sport) any time. Just wish they could afford more.

I like the BBC and Peter Allis. My only problems with their coverage are that they focus too much on putting. I am more interested in seeing full shots.

Secondly, I can't stand it when we they show a feature like this is what happens behind the scenes etc. I could not give a fu**. Just show the players hitting balls FFS.

cant stand Allis, way past the point he should be pensioned off but the Ping brigade seem to still like him, so no chance he goes anywhere. that said nice to have a break from Mark (i talk a much better game than i played) Roe

Peter Allis seems to divide opinion on here more than GPS or hybrids!

I like him. I like listening to anyone who rambles on like that. Like the old cricket commentator on the radio that used to talk about cream cakes or whatever else.

I don't need someone with more technical (current) knowledge to tell me what I'm looking at. I just want someone entertaining to listen to while a shot isn't being played.

Did laugh when after the Luke Donald presentation, Hazel Irvine finished talking and the BBC switched back to two empty seats in the commentary box :D

I guess Alliss and Brown had swanned off down the pub!! :p
