Basic Mistake By Rory

Re: Rory gets a 2 shot penalty.

I don't know the new rules, however, just to point out it's not Johnny nobody sitting in his armchair who spots something fishy and then mysteriously finds the direct line to the rules committee or tournament officials! I think that's what some believed happens.

I thought it was a normal golf fan sat on his arse at home who started the ball rolling with the Tiger/Masters rule situation?

It was a pro golfer and who is also a tournament director who spotted it on telly then phoned a fellow director who was working the masters

Re: Rory gets a 2 shot penalty.

Thought I heard the pros couldn't be penalized by someone phoning in from home for a mistermeaner.

Then you heard wrong. There is a new decision to the effect that if a ball at rest moves, but that movement can only be discerned using a hi-def / super slow-mo camera, then the ball is deemed to not have moved and there is no penalty. In fact the R&A and USGA issued the joint statement ( see http://www.randa.org/~/media/RandA/Related Documents/2013/TV Evidence Joint Statement 2013.ashx ) that states that they will continue to consider evidence submitted by TV viewers for other possible breaches.

I think they also mentioned that they had amended it, so that if a player is penalised after his round is over he only as a shot penalty, as Woods had at the masters. Instead of disqualification for signing a wrong card?

Unless your name is Simon Dyson!!!

Re: Rory gets a 2 shot penalty.

Great to see golf finds a way make headlines for some obscure ruling that 99% of the general public will go 'hur?' Shows the sport in such a positive way:confused:

Re: Rory gets a 2 shot penalty.

Apparently he only got a suspended ban because of his previous good behaviour. Not like Tiger Woods who has previous form!

Rory has previous form as well, remember the brushing sand from the fringe incident that was pointed out to him by Luke Donald?

Re: Rory gets a 2 shot penalty.

Re "Rule Changes" and "arm chair refs" and reviewing super slo-mo and/or HD Tv footage, I think what people are thinking of were not Rule changes as such just Decisions to clarify application of Rules.

First was a couple of years ago I think in response to Harrington making a double hit which was only noticed on super slo-mo after he had signed his card. He was DQ'd for signing for wrong score but Decision 33-7/4.5 Competitor Unaware of Penalty Returns Wrong Score; Whether Waiving or Modifying Disqualification Penalty Justified now says that in those circs when a player could not reasonably have been aware of the breach when signing for score, then instead of DQ the applicable penalty is added.

Most recent change (this year) is a bit different and basically provides that that if a ball moves but the movement of the ball is so small that it can only be detected by super slo-mo or hi-def camera then the ball is not deemed to have moved - Decision 18/4 Television Evidence Shows Ball at Rest Changed Position But by Amount Not Reasonably Discernible to Naked Eye.

Both are very wordy but can be looked up here

Re: Rory gets a 2 shot penalty.

I was looking through the stats. Rory is the longest driver on the tour but still just under Forum average.

Re: Rory gets a 2 shot penalty.

Having just seen it replayed on the telly, how the hell did the other caddy see it from the far side of the fairway?

Re: Rory gets a 2 shot penalty.

It never ceases to amaze me when a man (or woman) that makes their living from the sport, can drop a clanger on such basic points of the laws of the game.

Re: Rory gets a 2 shot penalty.

Wouldn't call him a cheat - would say that he wrongly gets rules bended to ensure he isn't DQed as witnessed in the Masters

He also made an illegal drop and someone of his experience and stature should know the rules

But I wouldn't call him a cheat just as I wouldn't call Dyson a cheat

Saltman I believe is the one so far doing the actually cheating

Yep I agree with you about Saltman but Dyson well he clearly cheated and got away lightly, if he was innocent he would not have been punished would he, nope......

Re: Rory gets a 2 shot penalty.

Anyone heard if the Euro tour plan a hearing for this one or is it being viewed/treated differently to Dyson's case?
