Looks like Rory has made a basic mistake taking relief from a walkway. His foot was still in the area he was taking relief from, therefore not taking full relief and a two shot penalty for his troubles ....Ouch

Rory gets a 2 shot penalty.

Apparently took a incorect drop on the 2nd hole when his ball was on a walkway, it's treated as GUR and after his drop his foot was still on the line marking the walkway so he hadn't taken full relief.

That's a shame and it's easily done

Hopefully it will spur him on

Lucky it was spotted, could have been another Tiger-gate Masters inquisition ... I'm sure he wouldn't have been branded a cheat though ;)

Just wondering who and when was it spotted?

If it was spotted during the round why didn't they let him know during the round?

I see he seems to have taken it quite well as he has just tweeted "foot fault...."

It's one that's annoying as the player is getting no direct advantage.

In this instance no, but if full relief meant dropping into a bush then this would not be fair .... and as usual the rule is simple to follow and enforce in its current form without any subjectivity to how much advantage has been gained etc

It seems it was Gonzalez's caddy who told him. Didn't say anything until after the round

On a side note really seems Rory is back on form. Seems to be scoring well while doing nothing spectacular, good sign

If a player were to only have full relief in a bush then they will then have to proceed as normal when the ball is found in such a situation. If a player were able to bend the rules by not taking full relief to not have to take a penalty due to unplayable lie then that seems unfair to me. Two shots seems harsh but dems de rules!

Fair play on Rory for taking it well - it's a mistake at the end of the day

Re: Rory gets a 2 shot penalty.

silly boy and his caddy should also take some blame for not spotting it.

Only blame that can be aimed at Caddy is failure (by both) to get Rules Official to ok it - which he wouldn't have in this case!

First rule for both Player and Caddy in relief situations should always be 'Where's the Rules Official?'!

Then, as long as RO Ok-es it (even if wrongly) the player is not penalised.

Re: Rory gets a 2 shot penalty.

If you see the highlights watch for the discussion between Rory and his caddy before they leave the green. Rory's face gives the impression something is up.

If he plays well tomorrow then he's still in with a great shout.

It was his FC's caddie that saw it when he played the shot but didn't flag it up until the 18th as he didn't want it to affect his round mentally.

That's actually really good from the FC caddy - respect for that

Re: Rory gets a 2 shot penalty.

Rorys post round interview he says if he'd known he'd have loved another drop as he got a bad lie. It wasn't even the video that got him, they had to go out and set him up to his divot to determine the position of his foot. And he (imo correctly) refers to this as one of the stupid rules in golf

May appear harsh but the rule is like that for a reason. Like so many rules they are slanted against giving the player choices. You either take relief (ie full relief) or you don't. You don't have the option of taking partial relief as this may give you an advantage. OK, in this situation, and probably most others there won't be this possibility but there could be, and this is what the rule is making sure can't happen. It's simple enough, and a schoolboy error no matter what Rory says. It's the same principle as why you can't play the provisional you have spanked down the middle when you find your first unplayable in the trees.
