Baseball

So I'm off on a New York/New England road trip next week and have bought tickets on viagogo for the Red Sox at Fenway. Paid $88 for two tickets, like Lord Tyrion about $25 cheaper than on Red Sox official site for same seats. Site says they will be available for download the week before game (after i leave UK) Should I be worried?

Really looking forward to the experience - any other tips for Fenway?

Canford, if you are driving from NY to Boston, if you get chance check out Plymouth where there is a copy of the " Mayflower" in the harbour.

And celebrate any home runs by Mookie Betts, JD Martinez or Hanley Ramirez. I have multiple shares of them in fantasy teams this season :-)

Could have saved yourself the airfare...
MLB coming to London next year...

If the tickets are 'affordable' might give it a go myself...

i promised to my nephew to take him to London to watch the games.
i never watched a mlb game live - only our lokal team the DUCKS - but i watch almost every game of the cubs at mlb.tv and absolutely love it

keep me informed how and where to acquire tickets

Well, back from the Mets v Braves. Really good fun. Very simple to get to the stadium, just take the 7 line. You can't miss the stadium. Easy to find your way around and we had really good tickets, section 410, behind and on the right of the batting plate. Nearly got a ball our way, it was dead on my line but just fell short. A bloke 10m to my left did get one.

The match was done in just over 2hrs, easy to follow and rapid fire. A friendly fan adopted us and pointed out lots of helpful things. The ground was excellent, lots of helpful staff, loads of food stalls.

If you are in New York and there is a game on then I would definitely recommend it. If anyone has any questions because they are thinking of going then ask away. I'll try to post some pics shortly.

Which game did you get to see? The Braves have some great young talent on the mound with the likes of Foltenewicz and Newcombe and have just traded for Kevin Gausman from the Orioles. And Ronald Acuna is going to be a superstar. The Mets on the other hand are a dumpster fire with two decent pitching talents in the form of DeGrom and "Thor" Syndegaard.

I've found that if you do the stupid English person routine there is usually a friendly fan more than happy to explain what's going on; they seem to have a particular love for the game that they need to share with those not yet fully of the faith. :D

Your seats were pretty close to where we were, it is a great view.

We saw them nearly 10 years ago, and were sitting in a bar in central New York discussing the game prior to going. A passing native overhead us and asked why we were going to see the Mets. I replied that I'd always wanted to see a professional ball game to which the rest of the bar in unison replied "Then why are you going to see the Mets?" Things haven't changed then? :(

The Mets are truly appalling and it stems from the front office and the ownership. They made the 2015 World Series almost by accident and now they are just awful. Every pundit ripped them to shreds for their non-action at the trading deadline earlier this week and they have no decent talent coming out of the minor leagues over the next two years.

De Grom pitched, the other guy didn't play. My helpful American said the ground would be full Saturday as they were giving out Thor bobbleheads. He did have the grace to laugh. He did say the Mets were pants. Apparently with a great pitcher, good fielders but no one who can hit the ball. The quandary was whether they trade De Grom to get those batters.

Yes, they played the Braves who apparently are doing well this year.

The pace of the pitching was amazing as were the throwing speeds, trajectory etc of the fielders.

I know diddly about baseball but really enjoyed the experience. I've been to two sports events in America now and they really know how to build a stadium that works for the fans, include the fans and make going enjoyable. Anyone thinking of going, do it. Don't worry about whether the team is any good or not.

Bim, you are right. My helpful American had spent time in the UK, had played cricket, liked his football as well so he was not just a baseball geek. My initial question was not a daft one, this happened, the ball was hit, stayed in the hitting area, landed, spun and nearly bounced into the crowd. What happens if it does bounce in I asked? Double base thingy 😁. Anyway, that set us off.

I'd happily recommend where we sat. If you paid more and got the level below then you had more chance of catching a ball, top edges, but otherwise it was spot on.

DeGrom is so unlucky - once again he held a team to almost nothing and got beat. It happened to me a few times in British baseball too. I've got him on two of my four fantasy teams and he posts great numbers in everything except wins.

Syndegaard is another top 10 pitcher. The Mets have two aces but nothing else to go with them. Each team has a five-man starting rotation (except my Rays) of pitchers and then 6-7 relief pitchers behind them. But when it comes to hitting for the Mets …… OK we'll pass on that one.

Glad you had a great time. Baseball is a great sport to watch either as a one-off or when you follow every game over a season. It ebbs and flows. As a famous baseball coach once said, "It's never 4th and 1 in baseball".

Enjoy the rest of your trip.
