Bargain...

+1 I hate the look of chunky irons hence the reason I'm trying to get into better players irons. I love a thin top line on irons.

This my argument. I got the G25's as they were the best fit for the current state of my game. As I said I was prepared to go backwards this year to work the big swing changes into my game. Nearly there. Just a couple of bad swings at the wrong time killing me but I can work through that. The plan is to improve the consistency over the winter and get back down towards single figures next year. In my mind, if I can get a short game (coming) and just work on the swing then I feel a better player club, a better looking club if you prefer, will be the way forward. I was playing TM Tour Preferred for years so I'm not actually a stranger to this type of club. I just thought (and still do) that the easier to hit club along with the changes was the better marriage rather than having a transitional swing and harder to hit clubs. Align the two next year and I'll be in business

A very expensive plan. Do you hit the G25's well?

As I said good luck with it Homer. Personally I wouldn't be too obsessed with getting to single figures, you can obviously play a bit to be playing off 11.

Yes I do hit them ok. And not an expensive plan when you take off the trade in for the G25's. No different to the likes of others on here swapping their clubs or buying new sets on a whim other than I am doing it with a specific goal in mind

Well Homer only you know what is best for your game and your right you don't change your clubs as much as most on here so I wouldn't worry too much. If I'm totally honest though I would have thought the i20's would have been perfect for you after using the TM's for so long. In my opinion you have the best woods and and hybrids on offer though

It seems to me ( I maybe wrong ) that you are taking it all too seriously and focusing far too much on set targets and rebuilds. Maybe you need to relax a bit and just enjoy it without having a goal.

Have you been to single figures before ? Why the need to go through a big swing change ? Possibly going for GI hasn't helped at all

Is it your ultimate aim to be a single figure golfer ?

I don't understand why your swing changes should mean your game goes backwards for a year. An improvement to the swing with the amount you practice should show quick results. Have a lesson with our Pro, he reckons you should be showing improvement by the end of the lesson, not the season.

I had a lesson at the end of last year, and the improvement was immediate and my handicap came down in the next competition I played. My major problem was posture, and unfortunately playing with the correct one knackers my back, so I have gone back to square one.:(

My aproach to buying any new clubs is to scour the market with an open mind and then short list a few I like the look of which I feel I can hit well. Then get fitted possibly at the likes of AG/Belfry or similar where I can compare my selections against each other. Then if possible do as Daveboy suggests and take a demo or similar out on the course and compare that to my current club over a couple of rounds, that is my ideal, if and when I commit I feel I have given myself the best chance of getting a club or a set of clubs which will help my game. Possibly the first stage in my opinion is the most important as I believe confidence is everything inb this game...... Good luck Homer like your dedication.

I've been playing 14 months and am now breaking 90 on a regular basis, so did something similar to the OP. I wanted to replace my Nike Slingshot irons, so purchased the Mizuno JPX HD 6 iron. Really liked it so went for a fitting at a local club with a pro I've come to know well and trust. They have great seection of custom fitting gear, Mizuno, Titleist, TM and Callaway. Anyway to cut a long story short, I'll be using my custom fitted JPX EZ forged irons with KBS tour shaft for the first time tomorrow.

Sounds like you got good service and the exact item you wanted

Enjoy and hope they work out for you

It's a really warm feeling to go from the first set to your first real fitted game improving set.

Trust me, you need them apex irons on your list too. I also think you'll need your clubs upright too. 2 degrees I recon. The fitting should be fun

Well I collected the club this morning and there isn't a mark on it, its brand new along with the grip. I went to the range straight after and the results are superb. I hit a few shots with my 7 iron to warm up and then went onto the Nike. I loved the smaller head at adress and the very little off-set but something was still telling me 'these are out of your leauge' how wrong I was!!!

I hit the Nike more consistently than I ever have with the Burners. I found the centre of the club more than I do with the Burners and the flight and dispersion was excellent. I went out onto the grass and still the same results. I went back to the Burners and I was all over the place. Ive never liked the look of GI clubs but this has confirmed it, It's like looking down on a spade and the off-set is really off-putting after hitting the better club. Out of 40ish balls I hit 1 off the toe and 3 towards the bottom and they still got out there.

Beginners luck? I don't know but I'll take the club out on the course Saturday and use it where ever possible to see what results I have. Although the Nikes are going for £350 I'm not rushing into anything as I still love the look of the AP2's but I feel today Has confirmed im good enough for the next step in irons.

I said on a previous thread (Perceived forgiveness) that if you get it into your head that you "Can't hit" a particular club, you've already lost.

I think the supposed better player irons are a bit of a myth really. Sure they might appear harder at address but put decent swing on them and they will perform the same as any other, even on mis struck shots the forgiveness is miles better than in years go by. The AP2's you mention for example are not that hard to hit really. I dumped my GI Ping irons a while back and would never go back to GI clubs.

Must admit I Do love the Mizuno's,a mate of mine is selling his MP54's in the next couple of weeks cos he's changed jobs, anyway I'm gonna be the new owner and I must admit I'm thrilled to bits,as you know I've been playing the MX 300's and improved my striking no end these last 12 months. The ap's look fantastic by the way as well as the Nike pro's so I hope they do the trick.

Sound planning. I tend to get a demo at the range to start and if I like it I'll get a trackman session and take it from there. I'm still looking to move on from the G range of Ping (hitting them ok but so damn chunky) and want to do the winter work and get the final layers of swing faults stripped away. Get the short game in nick (planning to use the dedicated resource at Pachesham including and lessons) and we I'll be flying in 2014 and can forget about 2013

Sounds to me Homer your putting far to much pressure on yourself, try to just enjoy golf and your scores will tumble.

The Nike pro combos are as nice looking irons as you will find. Great top line, and the feel is fantastic. I know, I've got a set! I've tried various mizzy's, titleists, etc, and these are as good as any, if not better. I love mine. When I first got mine, my coach had to have a hit, as he couldn't believe how quiet they were when middled. Almost silent (with range balls, granted).
