Early next year I am going to get fitted for a new set of irons. On my hit list are AP2 714, whatever Ping i range is out and Nike Pro Combos. As I don't want to rush into getting a better players iron I have been on the hunt for a single 6 iron in any of the above range and found a Nike Pro Combo ex-demo 6 iron on Ebay for £10 with £8 delivery. Just before ordering I realised the seller was in Solihull which is about 25 mins from me. After a few msgs I'm going to pick the iron up tomorrow for £10 which I believe is a great price.

I can now hit hundreds of balls on and off the course to determine whether or not I'm ready for the next step. The new AP2's are on the top of my list and by the looks of it are more forgiving than the Pro Combo's. I've hit both irons in the past on the range but a few shots here and there isn't enough to make the decision.

Let the testing begin...

Although the iron is ex-demo it looks like its hardly been hit and was listed as excellent condition. It's Got a stiff shaft - S300.

Sound planning. I tend to get a demo at the range to start and if I like it I'll get a trackman session and take it from there. I'm still looking to move on from the G range of Ping (hitting them ok but so damn chunky) and want to do the winter work and get the final layers of swing faults stripped away. Get the short game in nick (planning to use the dedicated resource at Pachesham including and lessons) and we I'll be flying in 2014 and can forget about 2013

this is by far and away the best way to test clubs. Buy a single iron off ebay and use it along side your current iron, you quickly get a feel if its right or not.

Good idea if it is the correct shaft for you, which if your current irons are correctly fitted looks like it isn't.

LOL your like a mad man rocking and rambling in the corner HJS  ;)

I don't blame you though although the G25 range is my favourite in all of the woods I must say any G range of irons are just horrible to look down on.

The only club I've ever had fitted was my G25 hybrid which has a tour stiff shaft (slightly stiffer and heavier than stiff). My irons where bought when I took up the game 2 years ago and I barely knew what a bogey was let alone a stiff or reg shaft. I'm sure ill handle the shaft lol

It's not really about handling the shaft, it's about getting the best shaft, lie etc. You may not hit this well but it still may be the best Iron for your game if fitted correctly. All I am saying is there is a lot to be gained from a correct fitting. Another consideration is the Mizuno JPX 825 Pro good luck.....

Why not just buy the clubs you actually want next time instead of what trackman says are best for you. Last time you ended up with clubs you don't seem to like & your handicap hasn't come down.

I agree. To go through a trackman recommendation and purchase new clubs and then decide they are too chunky seems a bit silly to me. The G series has always been known as a chunky range. I had the G15 series of irons before I swapped to the Mizuno's but only swapped because my game had improved a lot

Do you get stressed playing golf ? Is it serious for you ?

Because the clubs I wanted to buy I couldn't hit properly as Trackman proved. As for the handicap increasing and as I've said to you in NUMEROUS posts, this year was always going to be transitional following big swing changes last winter. Short game hasn't helped and some silly scores killing any chance of the buffer. There has been some really good stuff and I am still more than glass half full. Sometimes you have to reach the lows to hit the highs

Totally agree but with little options and for £10 stiff is perfect for testing. It's more how I get on with the head at this stage for me and if I can find the center of the face with consistency. I've hit the JPX pro and really like it but again 3 shots with a club isn't enough to say its right for me. That's why I believe this will be a great buy, I can hit as many balls as I wish and take it on the course. I believe an hour custom fit isn't enough time to decide if your swing is good enough for better players irons.

Bargain for the OP. Nice looking club too. Maybe one day I'll be able to hit such a club...perhaps.

But Homer, to spend all that time, effort and money in researching and buying the g25s, but then to look at moving away from them. What on earth was the point buying them????

Well good luck with it. No matter what figures Trackman producers it wouldn't fill me with confidence looking down at clubs I dont like the look of.

+1 I hate the look of chunky irons hence the reason I'm trying to get into better players irons. I love a thin top line on irons.

it takes a little bit of time to get used to most clubs. to hit a GI club you have to hit it at least close to the centre. an hour is not long enough to work out if a club is for you or not!

Davey you will be fine with the pro combos.

isn't it easier to just get a few demo 6 irons from your local pro with the different options you'd like to try. i had about 4 or 5 cluttering my bag at one point en route to getting fitted. once i had my fitting i got the CB712 and MB712 demo's back with the two shaft options i was recommended and had a few rounds switching them over to make sure i was happy with my choice before empting my proshop credit.

HJS - personal perception is very important what ever the numbers say - what exactly was the issue with the i20s? are you sure your numbers wouldn't improve with familiarity? the i20s were one of the options i looked at, but came across a few too many stories of toe weights falling out and all sorts to seriously consider them. the feel was good for a cast club, but it was only really bertolli light spread compared to the buttery mizuno blades i was using at the time!
