Bar levy

Just had our finance report published.
We had a £50 levy last year up to £100 next year.
Breakdown of members spending at bar.
Number. Amount
18. Nil. 3.6.%

62. £1- £50. 12.4%

77. £51 -£100. 15.4%

252. £101- £500. 50.4%

65. £501-£1000. 13.0%

26. £1000+. 5.2.%

So the club know who spends what.
I know one member who spent over 5k in drink and food but he’s like the golf club cat always there as he lives over the road.

Eighteen people spent nil even though they paid the levy that’s crazy.
We use to get a similar report when we had the levy. Quite revealing and we had plenty that also couldn't find a way to use £50 over the course of a year and indeed spend a single penny and almost certainly never set foot in the clubhouse during the year. I find that very sad

Quite simple really, those unsocial members could sell their levy on to the more social minded members . At a reduced rate of course , cheers

There might be people who spent "nil" as they didnt play at all (absence or illness) ....but kept up their membership. (to maintain joining fee?)

But playing and not using any of the any of the levy takes some doing!
Thats a good point and I am sure you're right about some not playing at all and keeping their membership active but I am still certain there is a fair percentage that did play and didn't spend a penny. That saddens me

18 people can’t be ill for a whole year that’s £900
Next year it will be £1800.

Bar Levy's will always divide opinion.

Personally if a club has one I'm happy as I will use it, I don't see it as a gun to my head or as a necessary evil that I have to pay.

Even just getting a pot of tea or a coke after golf and it'll be gone in a couple of months. I would spend that money regardless whether it's on my bar tab or paying cash.

Does seem rather a lot but at least it's 100% profit without any effort or cost of sales.

Had a look at mine and I'd easily be in the £1000+ category - I (we!) spend more behind the bar than I'd thought!

Had only spent about £9 of my bar levy but all spent now, as wife purchased some bottles of wine for Christmas ;) (she had spent all of hers as she is playing there during the day). I have played 4 times since joining and hoping it doesn't happen again as would rather play more and spend the money afterwards in the bar.

Sounded like there is more than just a couple of people who do similar. Wonder how many there is in each club.

I think this is one of the biggest perception problems.

Whilst there's evidence that not all clubs operate them in line with the stated principles, the levy represents a guaranteed turnover against which the anticipated margin covers the fixed costs of providing the level of catering the club feels it needs to provide.

Initially many clubs introduced them when the membership wanted the facilities to be open longer etc despite the historic usage not meeting that budget. So people guarantee their spend, the facilities are available and the people that want the facilities open are happy.
