Don't know much about the intricacies of golf club finance, but as a former volunteer bar manager at my old tennis club I know a bit about the importance of a well run profitable bar.

The annual bar profit would frequently match the income from membership, (£180 per member per year for adults) and was the driving force behind all of the ongoing improvements we were able to make to the club. (Floodlights, replacement courts, replacement fences, several clubhouse upgrades) The bar ran at a 100% profit margin generally and on several occasions through the year (internal and external functions) we would take in excess of 1K in a night. (@£2 a pint/measure this is pretty good going) Knowing that £500 of this was going straight into the club- 2.5 members equivalent in one evening was what kept me going for 3 years. Now there was no pressure on members to attend social functions, or even to have a swift drink after games on social evenings, but it was definitely noticed an occasionally commented on, those who were perfectly happy to see the improvements, but never stopped to socialise, or contribute, beyond their membership.

We don’t have a bar levy now.

We did 6 years ago, took it away, we now find more members spend at the bar and food.

We have very few car park golfers, think we are quite lucky.

Did the club do anything else at the same time(dress code, sky) ? or membership numbers increased over that time ?

Only ask as that takings would increase per 'head' by removing the levy, seems to be almost opposite of what you would expect but an interesting comment.

Dress code is far more relaxed then ever before.

Sky is a no go, we cant justify the ridiculous costs they want.

Clicked on your link to your club and I note that on your club's Home page there is no obvious navigation link for Visitors ...?
My club plays at a council-run public course. The council are idiots so they've let the catering & bar contract expire without having any replacements lined up, hence the bar and kitchen are currently closed until they pull their fingers out of their backsides and get someone else in.

Just had our finance report published.
We had a £50 levy last year up to £100 next year.
Breakdown of members spending at bar.
Number. Amount
18. Nil. 3.6.%

62. £1- £50. 12.4%

77. £51 -£100. 15.4%

252. £101- £500. 50.4%

65. £501-£1000. 13.0%

26. £1000+. 5.2.%

So the club know who spends what.
I know one member who spent over 5k in drink and food but he’s like the golf club cat always there as he lives over the road.

Eighteen people spent nil even though they paid the levy that’s crazy.
