i have read in a book somewhere that the softness or hardness of the ball asffects the distance swing and i was wondeing if i should get some soft balls or whetther i would not notice the differrence

In theory, a hard ball will go further, a soft ball will give more control around the greens. In practice, I doubt if you will notice. Play with what suits you, or, play with what you find. If you aren't an expert, I wouldn't bother with expensive premium balls, but if you go down the soft route, Srixon soft feel or Wilson Dx2 are soft. Srixon AD333 are a reasonable compromise. I avoid distance balls, because I find them too firm to putt with.

I agree, Srixon AD333 and Titleist NXT are both fairly decent balls for the average golfer. Just stay away from the total junk golfballs if you can (specifically anything that says 'Topflite' on it)

I used harder feeling balls when I had a problem with sidespin on my driver, I went back to the AD333 due to the benefits around the greens, though not when putting I find they shoot off the face, well the 2008 ones did.

horses for courses I think, I've found better ones that are hard off the face, most Callies, and cheaper ones that felt like butter.
mind you I putt like that - spread 'em all over

I guess it depends what you can afford to lose. If you are losing 2-3 balls per round it is very costly to keep playing premium high spinning balls. A nice mid-range like the AD333 or NXT are much cheaper and will give you decent distance and a degree to spin around the greens. In general terms the cheaper the price the harder the ball is and less control you'll have with irons into greens and chipping/putting. Try a sleeve of several different makes and see what suits you

I don't know, sneaking in like that, welcome anyway, even though I don't like Callies myself - they all feel hard.

Aspley Guise is a nice track, played there recently and would love to again. Probably the best society meal ever.
