Had a chat with a friend today and he was playing the other day in a friendly, he played his ball onto another fairway where someone else played and lost his ball.

I understand the ruling to be you drop from where the incorrect ball was played with no penalty, lost or not.

However my friend was told his ball was deemed lost as the other guy had lost it. Surely this is not right?

If you know or have virtual certainty that your ball has been played by an outside agency (e.g. a player in another group) then you may play another ball from where your ball came to rest. If you don't know the exact spot, then you must estimate its position and drop a ball at that spot.

The fact that the other player managed to lose your ball does not alter this. Your ball is not lost.

Shaun,
In case you need it to persuade your friend, the reference for pogle’s reply is Rule 18-1 and then the footnote at the very end of Rule 18 where it says

Note 1: If a ball to be replaced under this Rule is not immediately recoverable, another ball may be substituted.

That covers your situation where you couldn’t get your ball back because the other guy had put it out of sight.
