Ball fitting - It does make a difference

I had a 'ball fitting' last year at a local golf club as I know the pro very well.
It went like this;
ME : Hi pro, I think I need a 'ball fitting' in order to help me lower my scores.
PRO: Sure Slime, Srixon Z-Star Tour Yellow, that's the ball for you without a doubt.
ME : Why? Is it the control it'll give me around the greens?
PRO: No. They're bright yellow, easier to see in the rough!
ME : Good shout. I'll take a dozen as I'm playing all 18 holes today.

Slime
.

My mate bought me a pair of those blue tinted glasses for christmas, they supposedly make white balls stand out in the rough.

I had a ball fitting done purely because where I saw it advertised they were charging a tenner for a full ball fit inclusive use of trackman to get results, to be honest I'd have paid more just for the 45 minutes I got on trackman machine without a ball fitting.

So I took the plunge and was given alsorts to try and the balls all had manufacturers brands wiped out in someway to disguise the ball so you were hitting blind to encourage you to play each ball the same. The only time you knew what make a ball was, was at the reveal afterwards with exception of Callaway balls as the hexagonal dimples stood out.

I enjoyed the fitting and have to be honest it was superbly run BUT it still comes back to feel for me. The reaso. Being the ball I was recommended was the Bridgestone xFix which don't get me wrong is decent for winter but not the type of ball I want or get better feel from in summer.

Soy advice would be if you get to goto a ball fitting with a good launch monitor go along to see your stats but use the ball you feel happy with not the one the computer or rep says as they aren't the ones that have to play with it.

Kind of ironic. I went from using Srixon Ad333's, then to the Titleist DT Solo. I was told by a pro to look at a different ball and was recomended a Bridgestone e6. LOVE THEM!

A serious question, is the fact that they recommended a ball that is perceived to be be a bit cheap and for relatively poor players a factor why you did not change? Seeing as you are obviously a very good player with your handicap? I do not know what you play, but let's say they would have recommended another premium ball, would you have tried that out a bit more?

And on a related point, I do seem to remember one of the mags doing a ball test using a mechanical swing machine a bit ago. And I am sure the xFixx did come out with some seriously good spin rates round the green, better than a lot of the premium balls.

Good questions. It wasn't because the ball they recommended wasn't a premium one its actually a very good ball and one I'll happily use at this time of year and again from October through winter months. It's just through the summer months when things firm up a wee bit I prefer something slightly softer with the short irons and around the greens.

The ball I choose for summer is the Wilson FG Tour X which whilst a its classed by its construction type as a premium ball is only £25 a dozen so nowhere near premium price as its only £5 more a dozen than the recommended xFix, but it does allow me more feel around the greens in the summer but does lose me a few yards but I don't mind that.
