Bad Sportsmanship

If i was aware they knew i was in front of the marker & still let me play so i would get a penalty , sod the high ground mate , take your putt & il remind you after you have played .. if the guys hadnt been aware BEFORE id played ok id have told him then..

Dont understand this moral high ground if somebody does the dirt on you guys , he set the tone let him dance to the tune he called ..

Be who you are regardless of how you're treated. :)

Sorry Gary im on the other side here , treat others as you would want to be treated , if you were polite & friendly to me il return it , if your a sportsman il return it , if your a knob, likewise il return it ..

Itl make the guy think again before he does someone over if nothing else , if it doesnt , well then he deserves to be called for every miniscule infringement he makes .. Im too old to be nice to people who do me over guys ..

i'm full of admiration for your sportsmanship... you are certainly a better man than I....

in the same situation i would have found it impossible not to penalise after he had taken the putt. probably done it with a smile too.

but if we were playing matchplay all square on the 18th and he had the putt for a half i would advise him to move the ball back every single time. so i'm not all bad...

My point entirely. They set the tone and could have told Paul before he played the tee shot. After behaving like that they set themselves up really and so the penalty on the putting green seemed just to me and let him get on with it.

I left this tit for tat behaviour in the playground. Have your own prinicipals and stick by them will do for me.

indeed - to do otherwise would be to let them drag you down to their level and, in my case, I would end up beating myself up for letting them more than any lasting concerns about their behaviour.

This one really took the biscuit. Was playing an event today where we have a double tee and the markers were pretty close together. I teed it up by mistake between one for the 2nd hole and one for the 9th.

The two guys I'm playing with point it out AFTER I've hit so I'm three off the tee. And then I find out that they both noticed before hand I was doing it but thought I would be in contention for a good score so wanted me to get the penalty.

What a pair of complete and utter idiots.

But just to prove I was better than them, one of them was about to putt from the wrong place having moved his marker so I pointed it out. The irony when he said "thanks I would have got a penalty otherwise" was just dripping.

Almost the exact same thing happened to me in the inaugural Chichester Men's Open about 20 years ago. Sprinkler heads and tee markers were the same colour and on one hole - the 8th or 9th - I teed up between one of the markers and a sprinkler head.

The guy I was playing with kindly pointed it out to me the moment the ball left the club!

Nil conversation scenario for the rest of the round, but I had the last laugh - I was off 15 or so at the time and then played the back nine in level or 1-over to win the trophy!

Didn't ask for his number for a friendly game down the line, mind you...

So the guy knows your ahead of the marker, lets you play so you get a penalty & then tells you straight away & thats ok with you ? Fair play to ya man . i wouldnt go out of my way to create the problem for the guy or anything but if he makes a mistake like i did , id then do what he did .. sorry if that smarts a few people , but il treat you the way you treat me , no better , no worse ..

Where did I say what he did was ok. Bearing in mind how I expect the game to be played, I think his actions were as low as you can get on a golf course. That does not mean I would revert to that sort of behaviour myself. Surely that would make me as bad as he is ?

I play by my own standards nobody elses. I would have told him that he had replaced his ball in the wrong place, and used it as an opportunity to tell him that that is what good golf etiquette is all about.

I am too old to let some low life change my principals.

Hmmm interesting one this.

Can you be absolutely 100% sure they knew before you tee'd off that you were in the wrong place? If so, my inclination is the same as Homer's, treat them to a bit of their own medicine.

But if there is any doubt, take the moral high ground and smugly point out the error the guy is about to make.

Yep found out today from someone else in the club that the lower handicap guy (off 5) of the two knew I was doing it but let it happen. I will extend every courtesy on the course during a round in terms of looking for his ball and pointing such things out, but conversation on or off the course is totally out of the window. Otherwise I am condoning his actions. I think Smiffy's favourite word sums this kind of person up - nob.
