Awful rule

Your not gaining anything.

Just replace it WITHOUT penalty is surely the way it should be.

Total farce of a rule,it happens a lot at my course which is links and I always think it's a joke of a ruling....as I said we can't do bugger all about the wind speed!

I agree, totally ridiculous and unfair if you ask me!
Especially as you say it must happen a lot on links courses and what are you supposed to do?
The game is bloody hard enough without stupid rules like this punishing innocent players!!

Dunbar is the same, fast greens, a gust of wind on a side slope is real dodgy.

Exactly what I think, it's farcical! I guess the suits at the R&A would argue how do you determine that the movement was caused by wind and not the player touching the ball but surely it's bloody obvious!!!!

What happened?

Ror's going for birdie from 6 feet, grounds putter, huge gust of wind, ball moves 6 inches sideways and back........youg'un gets penalised.

Joke ruling.

BUT they all know the ruling and don't need to ground your putter but I do agree and it is not the only stupid ruling.

This is one rule they are looking at for the new rules book. I'd say it's probably going to be replace without penalty.

In the mean time for anyone at risk of this try learning to putt without grounding the putter in windy conditions. If it moves and you haven't grounded then you haven't addressed the ball (as defined in the rules) and can replace without penalty.

Just imagine if the open went to a play-off, both players have puts for par, player one sinks his, player two steps up and this happens!
It would spoil the whole 4days play for a nonsense rule!!!

Why should you have to change your putting style/routine to accommodate a joke ruling?

'It's windy and we know the player can't do jack sh1t about it but if you ground the club while putting and the ball moves your going to get hammered with a penalty even though you really cannot do anything about it.''

This really one of golfs most ridiculous rulings and by Christ there are a few!

Funny thing is that you can accidentally knock your ball of it's tee with no consequences but if the wind blows it on the green you get penalised

That's why this rule should change next year. It's happened a few times in high profile televised comps. Even close up HD shots have caused issues when a slight movement was picked up but not seen by the player!

If you don't want to be affected by this rule as it stands currently then don't ground your club until this time next year ;)

Perhaps it may be an idea for greenkeepers not to prepare the greens so rediculously fast? A common fault with many many courses. As for the ruling, yes it is unfair and it should be a different ruling on the green from elsewhere on the course.

The greens don't need to be fast for it to happen, ours are medium paced at best, never renowned as fast and it happens there as the wind can whip and gust up.

It doesn't really matter what you think of the rule.
Rory has grown up playing links golf and knows the rule and how to avoid being penalised.
I agree it's wrong but you have to live with it until next year when hopefully it will change
Fortunately, he wasn't on the 72 hole in the last group
