Augusta -Disappointing Performance from Europeans'

I do think he may have a poor luck burden somewhere, because his golf is superb and he almost always has a good showing but either bad luck or the finest margin of error leaves a great player lower than he should be.

The thing about Augusta is that it always is set up for Yanks not european players as you would expect and many can not handle that, bring the top 10 of Augusta to Turnbury and they wont make the top 20 either.

Think I am right in syaing, not 1 European has earned an automatic return to Augusta next year :(

You are dead right, Macdowell was the closest and he finished in a tie for 17th, next is Casey who tied for 20th.

Very, very, very poor showing from the Europeans and the only one who can come away holding his head up high in my opinion is Rory. The rest all need to go away and have a think about what they did....because all of their report cards will say "must try harder"

He shouldve played more prior to the Masters then and ensured he wasnt "rusty", its not as if someone told him he was playing at the end of March or sprung it on him as a surprise is it?

I wouldve thought a golfers top priority was ensuring they'd played enough golf prior to a major so as to ensure they are nowhere near rusty!!!

Not entirely sure how I feel about all the other Europeans because I didnt see much of their golf so wont comment.

But Rory can hold his head up high, Regardless of his placing, it was his debut and the guy not only made the cut, but finished under par, thats more than Harrington, Donald and Garcia did.

I loved the fact he hold out on the 72nd hole 1 HANDED! :D Quality! N. Ireland, be proud, be very proud!

:D Along with Rory McIlroy, Sandy Lyle, Justin Rose and Ian Poulter. ;)

I thought the best european performance was Rory.

First time for him, bit of controversy following the bunker issue but in the end carded some good golf, now hes familiar with the course and tournament feel I think he will be someone to watch next time thats for sure.

I believe some if not all lack self belief and motivation , From the Period of 88 till the mid ninties yet with few minor blips ruled that Course.

I can't beleive the Rory love in. He was lucky not to be D/Q'd and didn't play that well. It was a GOOD performance to make the cut ont he first visit but not a great one. Plenty of others have made the cut first time so its not an elitist thing.

I thought Westwood faded which was disappointing and Poulter flattered to deceive. Harrington looked drained from day 1 but the worst offender must be Garcia who was in a reasonable position to challenge but faded so badly. I thought McDowell did well enough without setting the world on fire. I agree that compared to reason years it was a disappointing return by the Europeans but sometimes these events will throw up results like this. I'm pretty cool with the general standard of the European tour vs the PGA and think come the next Ryder Cup everything will be fine.

Are the cheques just too big for the lesser places? Are the Brits just playing to pay the bills and have a nice lifestyle, without taking on the presure of wanting to be number one?

Year after year we read / hear the same story of 'could do better'. But, do they really care?

Okay so they're good players, without a doubt, but do they want to be 'great' players. It don't look it from where I'm sitting. Rory is perhaps the exception. Though hopefully the press pack will now stop the hype and let the kid develop without the hopes of a nation on him, (Tim Henman anyone!?).

Hats off to Phil Mic yesterday. My opinion of him has dramactically improved. There was a man who wanted to win, and wasn't just playing to make up the numbers.

And when is someone going to give Luke Donald a kick up the derriere. The guy is so blaze' and yet we constantly hear how he's got the game in him to win a Major. Well lets see the right attitude from him for starters. He just looks like he's making up the numbers. Actually like the rest of the Brits.

We've got enough guys in it. But not one has 'the fire'.

Don't you just love back seat drivers!! ;)

The problem with all the Europeans was that having made some headway they all threw it away. Just learning to hold on to what they have seems beyond them, even GMac went from -4 to + and back to -4.

Rory Mc I'll excuse - just! but even he has played enough 'serious' golf to know that you cannot just blast at everything.

There was one young lad who performed better than expected, in my book at least, and I think can hold his head up high.

Sandy Lyle.

The Steve Davis of British golf imo
