Whilst the final round has still to be played there are only 2 Europeans Poulter and Westwood on -4 in the Top 24. The chances of either of them winning are slight, being 7 shots adrift, although hope springs eternal!

Would someone care to give an opinion as to why we have no European appears to be challenging for The Green Jacket?

I don't think they're good enough, simple as that.
WTE of Harrington, I don't see any of them rising to the challenge on the Major platform. I thought two years ago Rose would take on the batton, but his game has flattened. Casey has it all, but I still have my doubts whether he has the mental fortitude to go all the way.

Casey astounds me, he really does. If ever there was a man who does have the ability and game to challenge for the top honours regularly then its him.

His swing is top notch, hiw power is awesome, his shot making ability is 1st class and he has the personality to boot.....where & why does it all go so horribly wrong so often?

Got to disagree,Poulter is nothing more than a run of the mill player who thinks he is way better than he actually is.

But sometimes that warped mental view is what you need.

Rose seems to have too much imagination, which gets in the way.

Poulter honestly believes

In my opinion, they dont need it.
They all want to win but dont need to win to pay the bills.
Too much money for top 10 places, so why risk everything for the win when another $250,000 will do very nicely thank you.
Too much money too soon.
My concern is Rory M. will buy a house in Lake Nona and become part of the Casey, Poulter and Donald set. :(

I think Mcilroy will stay grounded purley because he has the all round game that will eventually make him one of the best European players. I agree with Krokodil in that i dont think Casey has the mental game and as for Poulter, I think his (if somewhat over)confident approach is a big part of his game and if it gives him that edge like it did in the Ryder Cup where he was the only British player to turn up, then good luck to him !!!

The only thing that I can think of is probably a little contentious.

The Americans are really geared up for "target golf". They spend so much time on courses where you drive here and aim for the green there, that it's just second nature.

Our guys will have grown up putting emphasis on short game skills and creativity. All well and good, but pitching from short distance (thinking about some of the par 5s) doesn't seem to pay off, you can be inches away from the hole on landing and end up with a 50 foot putt....

It's the same for everyone, but GIR or "getting on the par 5s in two" golf seems to be paying off, look at Jim Furyk....

I suppose the only acid test is to compare the europeans that play all the time in the US vs. those that play epga as well.

I was going to make the exact same point. Not as contentious as you thought then!

True up to a point. But you can say that about the majority of the Yanks as well.

You need a true champion to stand up and be counted irrespective of the money. And at the moment there aren't any over here. We don't have the sheer number of players that the USA have, so we're always going to have long spells where we're miles behind them.

If I was his manager tho' I'd set Rose us for a few sessions with Paul McKenna. I think that he might, just possibly might, have a tiny glimmer of magic deep in his soul. He just needs to be able to turn off his brain, and let his body work by itself

We need another Faldo to appear. And remember that he didn't take the game up until he was 16. Bet the Spanish are having the same conversation as us.

It'll happen. Eventually. Maybe. I hope.

I think there has been a lot of wishy washy talk by some tour pro's this time round, I didnt feel any real anger, passion or grit and determination from all but two that I heard speak. The only one who sounded gutted but realistic and phylosophical was Harrington.

Why do you never hear any of them say "I played absolutely crap but I am going to kick some butt tomorrow!" or something similar, where is the umph, and self belief?
So many say'Well thats Agusta'???? well if you cant beat it, dont bother playing it, give someone who thinks they can a chance. As difficult as it may be only a defeatist talks about a course beating them.

Westwood doesn't mess around and he's a quality player, but you have to question his putting. I don't know how tricky the greens are at Torrey Pines, but he failed to win at the Belfry not long ago because he eventually faltered to get up n down at the 18th.....

The problem at Augusta is that you can chip/pitch a great shot, but if you can't convert the horrible 4-10 foot putt you are left with, you've had it. Cabrera and even Perry are holing out well i.m.o.

Even Tiger struggles around Augusta.....making anything over 10' seems to be as much about inspiration as consistency of direction/speed.

If you remember the famous chip in, nobody could repeat that with just perfect technique and perfect read, moments like that are like an "artistry" where the imagination takes control.....I've seen Tiger 3 putt from fair 2-putt distance at Augusta. He wants to hole the first, gives it the correct read and executes a cracking putt but you need luck or amazing inspiration to make the long ones.

It'll be a grind out for whoever wins.....

I agree. Also, I can't stand the B/S that some of them spout....
Rory was asked if "any" of his shots were struck perfectly, to which he replied no. Sometimes a perfectly executed shot doesn't get the job done on such strange greens.....if he couldn't manage ONE perfect shot (and be magnanimous enough to admit it, even if the result was crap) out of 72/73/71, maybe he should be off somewhere on the practice ground.....

Poulter is annoying as well. If I was interviewing him and he was so "full of it" I might be of a mind to remind him of the shanks he had last year...

Why can't they be up-front, say "I played well/poorly and did/didn't score well".

I laughed at ellis's comment about Poulters interview after a round, he said it was like pulling teeth interviewing him. I laughed my head off. :D

Westwood is a great player still waiting to happen somewhere, though its not his fault sometimes. :D

Are you suggesting he's cursed.....I have to admit, he seems like a cat with only 5 lives.....
