Attitude Towards Womens Golf

FD you hit a good ball but in women's club golf you are in the minority, hence why women golf gets the name it does for women hitting 7 woods into short par 3's of under 140 yards etc etc.

Golf, by virtue of the handicapping system, is probably the only major sport in which men and women can compete together in a more or less equal fashion. You certainly cannot imagine the same in football, rugby, tennis, cricket etc. etc.. Of course we have to recognise the physical differences between men and women and we should be celebrating the fact that our sport can embrace the concept of men and women being able – and allowed – to compete on a level playing field created by the handicap system. I suspect that some of us men are uncomfortable at the prospect of losing to a woman. To them I say “stick to your cosy circle of friends who brag about their 300 yard drives” and draw comfort from that.

The fact that significant numbers of both sexes prefer to compete with others of the same sex should not preclude the possibilities for competitions for those who are happy to compete with members of the opposite sex.

Absolutely. I am one of the small 'odd' bunch at my club who plays in mixed competitions and ladies vs gents matches - for the enjoyment of it. And yes - there is a bit of 'nudge-nudge' - but to heck with them. Fortunately in addition my club run a number of 'team' competitions where a team can be a mix of ladies and gents - and sometime ladies, gents and juniors. We also have a thriving ladies academy and are getting a good few new lady members that way and also a junior academy - and a good few girls in that. But girls (of all ages) will be girls - they want golf to be a bit glamorous too. So if we blokes think that too much is made of the glamour side of ladies golf then so be it - maybe for ladies the kit is more than the latest 2-ball putter or 440cc driver.

Besides - my language, behaviour and temper on the course - though never bad - are always a wee bit better when I'm playing with a lady. And maybe that is why when with a lady I usually play well. So gentlemen - take your partners for the next dance - the Medina Two-step.

That's certainly a problem for your club. When I was looking for somewhere to join last year regular comps on the weekend was an absolute must have. I guess your committee doesn't want to encourage female membership!

I think its a tough call, we need new members but are mostly happy with reduced rates and not playing during the day on Saturday.

I am considered to be a long hitter but only drive 170-180 (could be longer if I get less than my current 14degree driver) 5 iron around 150, PW about 100.

So discrimination is ok if it saves you money? Just kidding. I do appreciate that enjoyment is a major factor, but we need to strive towards equality and I don't think that we are doing that. My youngest has expressed an interest in playing. I'll accept reduced rates for juniors, but any club that treats her as a second class citizen will be quickly ignored.

I would love to coment but I'll get told off for it, I have before and probably will again so for now no comment from DB.

Oh yes. I still silently cringe when I see someone lining up their driver on at our 111 yard 11th hole. But that doesn't affect her right to be there and enjoying her game.

The general standard of women's club golf leads to quite a few compromises. How often do you have a nice hole with a carry over rough or a hazard for the tee shot but then see the ladies tee in front of the hazard? The better players would prefer to have the same tee shot as the men but plenty of others could simply never clear it.

But does this matter one iota? In a recent comp I played my rescue club on a 150yd par three (I'll normally hit it about 205-210). It was a bit windy against and I just felt that it was the club I wanted to use - so I did - hit a very gentle low draw under the wind - perfect. My partner (it was a foursomes) match wondered what the heck I was doing but didn't ask. Then he saw the shot and result - and he didn't question my decision.

my mates girlfriend plays with us quite regualry and is off 10. she gets a bit pissed off at the lack of womens comps. sometimes there is just not the numbers or there is no womans comp on. id be happy to let her play in our comps if she just did 3 cards off the yellows and started again with a new handicap. shes more than capable of playing so why not let her?

She is only 4 so im hopeful that things will change. But they won't if no one wants them to.

Something that frustrates me is that although some people want change, many others do not. At my club, the men already complain about the level of access women have (significantly less than them already BTW). Some of the things I'd change, given the chance, would probably be opposed even by the majority of the ladies. The non-working, social golfers have a totally different agenda than those like myself.

On a side note, can the better ladies opt to use the gents tees for comp and handicap purposes if they want to.

I don't believe so and it would cause lots of problems and complications I'm sure.

women never get the honour as they always have to wait to hit. i find that a bit unfair!

It's true. I played with a couple of gentlemen who really wanted me to take the honour. I declined on the grounds that if we didn't always let them hit first I'd end up wandering in front of them at the wrong moment!

its unfair that you dont get the privilege of going first. Its also unfair that the men are used a guinea pigs to see the how the wind affects the tee shots on the next hole.
