I know a certain pro was accused of being racist for making a comment related to this but I think it's a interesting question.

Why does Asia-mainly Korea- have such a strong hold on the women's game?

Is it a culture thing? If so then why don't the men win more?
Or do they have a certain swing characteristic that means they hit it further then their competitors?
I know you do have woman who challenge the field like Georgia hall but in general it seems that Asia rules when it comes to the women's game

Archery is another good example. 3 of the top ten male archers are South Korean. Best female team archers are South Korean. I think that their ethos is to identify potential at each sport at an early age and then the training for that sport almost becomes a way of life for the chosen ones.

Someone once told me that the men in S.Korea have to do 2 years national service, that's why they are a little behind the ladies.

Plenty of great Koreans on the men's PGA tour.

Far easier to become a tour professional as a female than a man. Significantly more men play than women.

If you took two 4 year old kids, a man and a woman, and gave them both world class training at golf, the woman would be more likely to become pro.

This is what is happening in Korea...They are really specialising and nurturing certain sports.

I'm not sure this is true. In numbers, more men play golf, and the number of tour spots available for men and women is similar, so the percentage of men who make it would appear to be lower. However look at what reward there is for making it, you can come 200th on the PGA tour or 120th on the Euro tour and make more money than 50th on the LPGA tour, or 1st on the Ladies Euro tour. It might be easier to get a tour card as a woman, but to make a living playing golf is much harder, and in the earlier years would likely need a lot more support and financial backing.

This also ignores culture and physical traits. It's often a taboo subject, but different ethnicities of people have different genetics that provide advantages and disadvantages in sport - why are so many top sprinters of West African origin and so many distance runners East African, particularly from Kenya and Ethiopia? Culture plays a part too, certain sports are considered masculine or feminine among cultures - why is motorsport male-dominated and why do men not play netball?

Men play basketball instead of netball. The change is going to be more women playing basketball than men playing netball. 100 times better sport.

Both men and women play both sports. Your response illustrates part of my point, for whatever reason, culturally you see netball as a feminine sport, and basketball as a more masculine sport.

The numbers say that.

Netball is a predominantly female sport, by some way. One of the reasons in this country the Olympic association don't give netball funding. To pretend otherwise is stretching it.

More women may be playing basketball now, that mirrors other sports that in the past have been mainly male dominated. I would expect that.

Sorry I don't think it is easier making a living playing pro golf as a man.

It supports a few hundred then there are thousands, tens of thousands, who are on mini tours needing backing trying to make a break through.

We hear the sob stories about the top women not getting paid millions, but it is a very small subset of men golfers who make a lot of money.

You can think what you like, but the numbers don't back up your belief. This is not about sob stories or whether I or anyone else believes it is fair, just the simple fact that there are more female golfers per ladies tour spot that pays a sustainable living than the equivalent for men.

Mens golf supports around 350 players to the same standard that womens golf does for around 50 players. That's a ratio of 7:1 or about 14%, in the UK that's about the split of male to female golfers, so it would seem about right at a first glance, but globally the number of female golfers is around 25%, so statistically, it is harder for a women to make it.

South Korea is pretty much the only country in the world, where successful female golfers are treated like superstars. And they earn money. That then attracts more girls to the sport (and more parents ... most of those Korean players started golf very early in their lives, their parents' interests probably had more to do it than the kids').

I think another reason for the Asian players being that successful is that most east Asian countries still require more discipline and obedience from their children, especially girls. And I am not saying that is a good thing. Pressure like this can make a childhood and youth very very miserable. But it can also produce great athletic achievement.

It was mentioned today during the women’s open that for the first few years they never see a golf course, just a range, where they ingrain the fundamentals.

I would imagine the main reason the Olympic association doesn't fund netball might be because it's never been played at a summer games...

I actually saw an article about this recently. Maybe it wasn't Olympic funding, you are right it probably wasn't, but it was certainly major funding and Netball was missing out as it would not put money into encouraging boys / men to play. The funding bodies will only put money into sports that encourage equal participation. Netball argued that was ridiculous and be a waste of money. They wanted to concentrate on females only, really focus on them, and not spend money on trying to encourage males who were unlikely to play it anyway.

I'm not sure you disagree with what I am saying. Why would males be unlikely to play netball? Cultural factors.
