I would be interested to hear thoughts on the course in the following order :-

Favourite hole and why:-

Least favourite hole and why:-

And any changes to the course that could be made in your opinions:-

Favourite hole would have to be the 8th, bunkers on the left ideally positioned to put doubt in the mind whether to take a risk and take driver or take a 3 wood and leave a longer second shot.
Least favourite hole would have to be the 12th, didnt like the fact that it was mostly blind hole.
one thing I would change is probably to have it a bit windier, i dont hink it was windy enough
only joking. I think the only thing I would change are maybe some of the stroke indexes, stroke index 1 I parred quite easily both days, and the par 5, I think it was the hole after was something like SI 13 and i struggled to a 6 on the friday and never got anywhere near after 3 shots into the wind on the saturday

Favourite, 12 (just). I'm a masochist I think, I like the tucked away greens.

Least, 9. I just never got to grips with this, it appears tighter than it probably is and coming from out of the shrubbery is decidely not nice. Besides for me it's at that 'what the hell do I use distance'.

Changes; not much, a couple of places could maybe do with signs for the next tee.

Favourite hole: probably the par 5 6th although any of the 4 par fives could get my vote.

Least favourite: one of the par 3s: 9th or 13th. The 18th is also a bit weak.

Changes to the course ? I don't think many changes are needed. You mentioned that the committee had considered extending the 6th by 20yards: I don't think that is necessary.

The first 8 holes sit very well together and should be left alone. Holes 14-17 are also a good stretch.

Could you get rid of the 18th and make another hole somewhere else on the back nine? The current 17th would make a great closing hole and the green is close to the clubhouse.

All in all I loved the course and would be perfectly happy if nothing at all was changed.

Favourite was the down hill par 3 16th? Great view of the course from there, and the best par 3 on the course.

17th was a favorite too, and would have made a great finishing hole. I liked 18, but it isn't a closing hole to be afraid of with a medal card. I think if you got through 17 with a good card, you would breathe a sigh of relief and think, made it.

Weakest hole (not in terms of scoring) was 9. A bit out of character, with no contouring. Not sure how to improve it, but it lacks character, and looks a bit squashed in, right on the inland boundary. Also the sand in the right hand bunker is a bit mudlike compared to the rest.

Signage in a few places would be good, especially having sent the old trolley off towards the next tee, in the wrong direction, on one occasion.

Overall loved the course, and would happily recommend it to others, and come back myself.

Other than that, drag it further south?

I would say the weakest hole for a new player to the course would be the 12th with it's blind 2nd shot and not much to aim at off the tee. However, it's not a bad hole in itself once you know where to play.

My favourite would be the long par 4 14th. A long accurate second shot required into the prevailing wind and a great green. I also liked the 1st and the 8th, though, as they sat very easily on the eye.

Changes. Yeah, more signs, like most courses. Not anything else to grumble about.

Fav hole..10th..where we shook hands on friday

Least Fav..3rd..couldn't get a par either day

Unfortunately the weather didn't do the 18th any favours but it is a great risk/reward short par 4 when driveable with scores from 1 up possible.

I'll chip in then.

Fav hole tough one so I'll go with holes..6th a real hard par 5,tough tee shot, tough 2nd and tough 3rd.14th good hole with great green setting,15th great par 3 with fine views.

Least fav has to be the 4th a decent enough hole but it is a remodelled hole now and the green is totally not in keeping with the rest of the course and an awful designed green.

Changes?I would stick in a few new tees, all further back so just tiger tees at 6th,14 and 15th and rip up greens 4 and 8 and remodel, think the 8th green needs turned 25 degrees(this too is a remodelled hole in the last ten years) and 4th needs made larger but the actual site of it is fine.Tidy up a few path edges, bit more divoting done more regular and yes signs for visitors....your comments will be passed on.

Fave ... 4th

Least fave .... 8th (duck hooked tee shot on both days)

I can find a fault on the course not even the wind. Perhaps a Bovril tent on the 5th and 14th could help thaw the body a bit.

For the time of year, I was really impressed with the state of the course. Tees were good, fairways were also in good condition although there were signs of numerous divots in the popular landing areas. Time to get the juniors out to reseed these divot patches maybe ?

Favourite Hole, 14th, testing hole from the back tee. Sheltered green makes playing the correct club into the green very important. 15th would be my next favourite hole.

All in all not a lot wrong with the course. Dodgers comments about 8th did make me think back to my shots into that green. makes sense now if it was relaid 10 yrs ago. I'd go along with a slight rotation of the green, it might accept a shot in a bit better.

Signage again would help on certain holes where the wat to the next may not be too clear, 6-7 12-13 and 18-darkened room !

Favourite hole would have to be the 5th par 4 stroke index 1 on the card and the reason made par on both days
As for any changes leave it as it is a really challenging golf course

I really have nothing to compare it with as it was my first outing on a links course.

Overall I thought it sat easy on the eye.
I liked the 16th, 15th & 8th.
I quite liked the 9th, decent shot in both days, not much to worry about regarding hazards. It would be interesting with another 10 yards on it.

I would have liked OB posts on 6th. I had hit my shot before realising it was there.
Signage, yes, without the knowledge of JF on Friday, I could have still been looking for a few tees
Also 18 playing over 17 was alittle odd.
Having said all this. I would still rate the course 9/10.
Considering the weather and time of year, it was almost perfect and regardless of future meets, I will return!

The divots were mentioned by myself and Toad on the 8th. I guess your members enjoy playing turf golf all year round but it does have an effect on the condition of the course come the new season.

For me i would say the sixth is my fav hole.

Did like the 3rd and 4th. Bit of a risk and reward off the depending how much of the dog leg you want to take on. Did not notice anything wrong with the 4th green tbh dodger.

Weakest hole? I would have said the 12th after day 1 but once you know where you are going its not too bad a hole. I would agree that 17 would be a great closing hole and that 18 is the weakest. Maybe 18 would be a better hole downwind with the green in range. Never felt too clever standing on the 17th green with balls flying over your head from the 18th tee

Sounds as though I need to get my backside down to Goswick for a hit, looks and sounds like I have really missed out.

Further to Vig's post about OB signage at the 6th, he had the same problem at 11. We found his ball on the road and looked for a local rule regarding a free lift or play it as it lies only to find it was OB. A few posts along the road would be a good idea

A big sign sits on the tee at 11 Stuart stating 'a ball on or over the road is OB' or words to that effect but as we were playing off the Summer tees and the sign is on the winter tee that is in use at the moment you would not see it,also it is written in black and white on the back of the card as is OB for 6.Not sure posts are an option as cars need to come up onto the verge often to pass one another.
Anyhow I have a meeting with Club Captain tomorow night and will be passing on everyones ideas on improvements.

dodger,

Pass on our thanks to your club captain for the hospitality the club gave us. It's certainly painted Goswick in a good light, both as a very good course to play and as a friendly club. I know I'v been talking about it to several friends since we came back and we may well have a wee outing down there later in the year.

It's a man thing Dodger I never read instructions until i have something left at the end .
The OB on 11 WAS on the back of the card but I wasn't aware until I asked the others. Didn't see the sign

Just to echo DCB's comments, pass on our gratitude.
