I've had a pain in my middle right finger for some time now, its slightly swollen at times around the middle joint and sometimes tender. Haven't really given it much thought as it always hurts for a couple of starting holes then I become immune to it, until the next morning.

Showed it a couple of guys yesterday and they have said its Arthritis!

I was always told I would suffer later on in life with all the boxing I did as a kid and in the forces and then followed that up with rugby but now I'm into this great sport, I'm wondering, can it affect you greatly?

Do you suffer with arthritis but have been able to adapted to it or suffer anything else but are still able to compete and enjoy your golf.

My back is terrible at times, it's like a boxer's glass jaw, it can go at any time.
Without my leccy trolley I wouldn't be able to play some days and I have to take pain killers and anti inflamitorys before game normally.
But I play when not laid up and tend to enjoy it.
I have to stretch a lot before, after and during the round. GB72 + Junior may remember at Hillside I kept lying down to stretch my back as I was carrying that day and really struggled.
The thing about golf is that virtually anyone of most abilities can play to some level.

see a Dr now, Arthritus is very manageable these days

is yours just in 1 finger? might be a tendon thing as opposed to Arthritus as Arthritus is immune system issue, but it could be the early stages so get it checked out now

Yes just 1 finger, got to see a nurse this week anyway as just moved doctors so I'll show it her first.

Thanks

I get it sometimes in exactly the same place as you. Ranges from sare as... to just a twinge. Usually goes away after exercising. Be interested to hear your diagnosis. Best of luck.

I have it in my back, some days i cant bend to even get my socks on as my back is that stiff,i do plenty stretching before i play and now during playing.
I do take medication for it and i could go months without any problem then it will flare up out of the blue.

I have nodal osteoarthritis which sounds similar to your problem. Main affected finger currently is the little one on my right hand which is the interlocking one so no doubt exacerbated by golf. Can be painful but often looks worse than it feels!

Just Googled that and looked at some images and yes, it looks like the same with a swelling of the middle joint in my middle right finger. Do you take anything or is it being treated or is it a case of that's it, work around it!

I have arthritis in my feet which can be dam painful especially if I play 36. Grin and bare it, really the best that you can do. I take a mixture of co codamol 30/500 and diclofenac.

I would have to disagree with DV as the only other option I was given was to fuse my toes however this was not guaranteed to eliminate the pain. I only take the co codamol if I really have to and the same with the diclofenac as the long term side effects of both have to be considered. Also the co codamol "bungs you up" therefore I eat quite a lot of liquorice if I have to take them!

It is true that it flares up more in the damp and cold conditions so keep the effected area as warm as possible.

I also have had surgical insoles made which if I'm being honest I'm not sure if it has helped or not!

Very true. When I'm offshore mine goes bananas...

A friend played with it for ages and hasn't Mickleson been reported with some kind of arthritis he manages with diet amongst other things.

You can get arthritic grips for golf clubs, tend to be a little oversize with things like nobbles on the grip.

I bust the knuckle on my little finger when I was a kid and have never been able to interlock as the pain is too great. I can and do use the Vardon grip, baseball is the other option for me. Tried baseball grip a couple of weeks ago and it led to more shots moving left, seen a most people tend to have the ball move right, might be worth more consideration from players.

Yep pretty much work around it! It tends to flare up and settle down again so if I need to take ibuprofen or something I will but usually just grin and bear it! I do take cod liver oil and glucosamine supplements but who know whether they help...no harm trying though.

Two hips replacements in the last 3 years tells the story for me!

At least I could have the bits that were painful, replaced, and now I can not only get round the course really well, I can spend time crawling round the floor with my 1 year old grand daughter. Like most I never sympathised properly with people who complained of arthritis and then I got it myself and realised just how painful and debilitating it can be.

I feel sorry for people who have it in fingers and toes and neck etc where it cant be effectively eased as you wouldn't realise how you suffer unless you have it. Take all the remedies and hope they work is the answer until a cure is found, and I hope it will be found soon!

If its affected by the cold more, would rubbing Deep Heat or similar over the joint help by driving warmth into the finger and keeping it more subtle?

Don't think I'm at the stage of pain killers yet, more an uncomfortable nuisance at first with the first few blows, but, it aches like (can't say what I want to say) mad in the morning.

Well it wouldn't hurt and the massage alone might alleviate it a little. Try to keep your hands warm too.

Fish,

You quite possibly have Osteoarthritis, which can indeed be brought on by trauma - and boxing is about as traumatic as anything!

There are about 100 different flavours of arthritis. My mother had several, and a few other chronic problems (asthma, exzema/psoriaisis, angina, stomach ulcers) before skin cancer beat her. Rheumatoid Arthritis is the immune system 'failure' one.

Usual advice, for this, though - go see a Doctor! Not entirely sure they can 'cure' it though!

i have it in my toes and along with gout it is a killer,i used to have injections in my feet but cant have these anymore due to my renal problem, have to put my feet in ice water when they get really bad then in warm water, with the pain killers i take it seems to take the edge of it,as i keep telling the misses getting old sucks.

I have a swelling above my knuckle on the finger next to my index. Thought it ws down to a rubbish grip but its been sore for a few months now and getting a bit worried. Also getting repetitive pain in the lower side on the right. Suddenly shooting pain and difficult to move and it goes away in a few minutes

Sounds just the same, Google Osteoarthritis and look at "images". Some pictures are excessive but some show my middle finger joint above the knuckle just as it is, slightly swollen at the sides. I'm seeing the Doctor on Wednesday.
