I know that the depth/shape of grooves on 'playing' clubs are defined by the rules but does this extend to putters?
Many putters have no grooves or have face inserts so I'm guessing that they may not be regulated.

Why do I want to know? I recently tried a Rife Trinidad with well cut grooves and really liked the way the ball came off the face - really smooth roll. The grooves on the face of my Rife 2-bar blade are becoming less defined and if it's legal I want to re-sharpen them.

Viscount, you need to check Appendix II in the Rules

http://www.randa.org/en/Rules-and-Amateur-Status/Rules-of-Golf.aspx#/equipment/?ruleNum=App19895501

Section 5 relates to club faces. So far as putter faces are concerned section 5f says

"f. Putter Face Markings
Any markings on the face of a putter must not have sharp edges or raised lips. The specifications with regard to roughness, material and markings in the impact area do not apply."

Grooves come under markings in the impact area (section 5c) so it seems that the specific provisions relating to grooves do not apply to putters.

Might be worthwhile checking with your pro or a local club maker or maybe e-mailing Rife.

many thanks, I'll check first as you suggest but I think if I just remove the blurring it should be OK.
surprised that putting can have such an impact on metal though.

Depends on how many times you have to hit the ball with the putter to get it in the hole. Some putters see more use than others :o :o :D :D
