Reason i ask, is that i have down loaded 2 apps and now enter every round i play, go round with 2 mates, we are playing 2 rounds a week, so so far have completed 10 cards.

now i appreciate that playing with your mates socialy is totaly different pressure wise to the montly medal or weekly stableford, but according to my apps my handicap is tumbling.

i know i am playing well but just wondered how accurate they were compared to entering cards with your club sec via medals.

according to apps i have taken 8 shots off my start of season handicap, using golfshot lite and view ti golf.

many thanks

I would imagine you are also playing off the yellow tees rather than the white tees? Or whatever colour they are at where you play?

I have an app on my phone for keeping track of every round i play good or bad.

this will only take the handicap as though the CSS was the same as the par and thus could be out by a shot or two potentially every round, i actually set mine as though i am two shots better then my handicap to account for yellow tees and CSS for instance and to push myself.

Re iphones are banned, my understanding is that they are only banned if you have the ability to check slope and wind etc, if you can prove yours doesnt then i believe they are ok.

I played quite a few opens and declared an iphone and not once was i told it was banned.

would be interested though to find out why you think it is banned that way i dont fall foul and get a DQ

thanks

can of worms lol, been discussed on here plenty of times but iphone has a compass on it and a dmd is automatically banned if it contains a compass, whether its being used or not which means an iphone cannot be used as a dmd in competitve golf

I don't know how many times I have to say this...you can get and have your h'cap adjusted off the yellows as long as it's a measured course and has an SSS.

In answer to the OP, if the course has an SSS and you play it off or very near to the measured blocks it will be fairly accurate assuming you aren't giving gimmes. But the only real way to calculate it is in proper comps as there will then be a CSS and you're playing under competition pressure.

As a guide to your h'cap I'd say it's fine.

EH how does a compass help your golf ?? surely if you need a compass to find the hole you are in BIG trouble

Stuffed if I know how a compass will help you in golf - and you can use your (analog) watch as one anyway. Seems a daft reason to ban them imo - but maybe SkyCaddie etc have had some 'influence'.

As for the OP question: No difference between a Supplementary Card exercise (which uses SSS) and the way you are doing it, as you effectively 'have a card in your hand' every time.

cheers , yes i appreciate that they are banned in comps, i wasnt asking that,

thank you to the people who just concentrated on the handicap issue , my course only has yellow tees, and yes they are properley measured and is recognised on the gps and score card , the slope rating is 135 which i have entered and i used my last seasons handicap as my starting handicap, not even worrying about stableford points all i am concentrating on is first few months is consistent low scoring stroke play and making every shot count, although we play social there are no gimmes and we are very competitive as leader at nine gets to choose half time refreshment, worst front nine pays, and best score at end chooses after round food with worst round paying

so trust me every shot counts
