are range finders allowed in club comps

Indeed. That's why I used the 'almost certainly' phrase. But blew it by a badly worded next sentence! Should have mentioned the 'precise location' or 'forecast' aspect.

Forecast or 'area' temps are ok. Getting temperature for precise location isn't.

Still not quite right. You may 'get' a temperature for a precise location from the internet. You may not use a device than can actually measure it.

Then the 'almost certainly' should be deleted/ignored. Going to Internet for weather - even if that includes temperature - IS fine. Nice simple way to differentiate btw.

Now to just sort out/confirm Barometers/Hygrometers! And to figure out how any of that could have really helped - over simple pre-round calibration!

The decision that Rulefans response is probably referring to adds another piece to puzzle that would indicate that being able to actively measure conditions is the primary issue. I'll be very surprised if I get get a response saying that barometers and hygrometers are ok.

Decision 14-3/18

Q. During a stipulated round, may a player access local weather information (e.g. wind, temperature, humidity) through an application or internet browser on a multi-functional device?

A.Yes. The prohibition in Rule 14-3 is only applicable to the specific act of gauging or measuring conditions that might affect a player's play (e.g. through use of an anemometer or a thermometer). When accessing weather reports provided by a weather station through an application or internet browser, the player is not actively measuring or gauging the conditions. (New)

Now all we need to do it locate a few internet ready weather stations around our courses and we can make a mockery of the rules.

It's not the measuireing of a phenomenon that is prohibited, it is the measuring of a phenomenon dirctly by the player that is prohibited,

Sunningdale said that their courses wern't mapped by Skycaddie, so I guess they may not allow them in comps

Sunningdale haven't had it mapped because they are Sunningdale. They have had the laser reflector things on the flagsticks for years and have sold the laser in the Pro Shop to bounce of them for a similar length of time.....

Speak for your self SILH .......... Oh yes you are are .... Again!

Of course I am Chris :) I may have rowed back a long way on my general position in respect of DMDs - but my heels are dug in in respect of comp play over your track - not that that'll make any difference I appreciate. But at the moment I shall not be moved :)

I'm someone who couldn't guess 170 yards by eye and isn't going to memorise all the distances so I need a laser/DMD for my golf, comp or bounce game. For me, golf is a game of hitting a ball a certain distance so, to stand a chance of winning, I need to know the distance! Golf, for me, isn't a guessing game of distance! But we've been through this so many times!

We have a basic weather station between the 8th and 11th greens and 12th and 9th tees, but nobody has been able to tell me what site uses the information it gathers

You didn't just write that did you? Where's that Popcorn :D

I'd guessing that round our own tracks we pretty much know all our distances as accurately as we ever need to - and for most conditions and we also know our clubbing.

But I appreciate that on this I am a pretty lonely voice in the wilderness.
