Just booked a holiday to the Poor Man's Caribbean in July, and my son and I were hoping to get a round of golf in (hurricanes permitting).

I was wondering if anyone has any experience of playing out there, and what the standard of the Rental clubs are like (as we won't have the weight to take our clubs with us!)?

I played Cocotal and La Cana in the Bavarro/Punta Cana area in 2006. Really nice courses and there are plenty of others to choose from.
Check with your Tour Operator, you should be able to book your clubs on at a set price. I paid £30 return, which is cheaper than renting when you get there.

I've played a few courses there. Depending on where you are based there are two courses that I think you will love...
1) To Dye Fore.
2) Teeth of the Dog.
Both are on the East Coast and quite close to each other. They are world class courses, hugely testing and definitely worth the green fee. I hired clubs and was given Callaways at both courses.

I'm afraid the other three courses I played were a bit tame. So much so that I can't even remember their names to tell you to avoid them.

I've been to the D.R. in the summer and found it way too hot for golf. I took a wander onto the Playa Dorada course and was glad I didn't take my clubs t.b.h. I'm sure there are some good courses, but with the heat and lack of quality assurance, I'd certainly recommend you do lots of investigation. Given that Taxis booked "off resort" are incredibly cheap, you could get onto one of the top courses even if it's not near your hotel.
