Anyone play in the freezing conditions?

My personal favorite is when its so cold that mud freezes on the club face - was using a tee for ages to clean it until a mate said blow on it and wipe it with a towl*, which worked well

* Make your own jokes!

Glad we didn't go out by the sounds of it. However my brother told me of a friend of his, nicknamed something like cheating jack.

Chipped onto the green, got out his putter, then trailed his putter along in a roughly straight line ball to hole, then putted. Ball followed like it was on rails even where he wobbled his putter a bit.

Don't think anyone played with him after that, ever again.

Played yesturday and although i didnt really enjoy it was good to be out. a good mix of guys and banter, but there is something uninspiring about getting in the car at 8am and being told its -2. and on the way to pick up one of the guys watch the temp guage drop to -3.........then -4......

i think we were blessed with temps up as high as +3* but it was that cold i doubt id play again in that condition. the high hc players in the group scored wellish, but as a lower capper off 12, the card had far to many 1 pointers on to be enjoyed.

Yeah have done it a few times before and did yesterday. Can be a bit of fun sometimes.

Our 3rd is a par 3, about 130 with a carry all over a pond, and they stuck the pin at the front. :angry:Impossible to play it and keep the ball on the green. I tried to be a bit clever and drop it just short of the green in about a 10ft space between the pond and green but dropped it just short into the frozen pond and then left myself with a 40 yard pitch back over the water again, which I landed in the 10ft gap and still couldn't keep it on the green.

Ended up just playing 9. Was playing bad and the course was unbelievably slow even though there didn't seem to be that many people out.

If the pond was frozen couldn't you have landed on it and bounced up to the pin ?

The thought did cross my mind ;)

I've got away with a barnes wallis before when it wasn't frozen. Topped it two skips, hit the bank, popped up and came to rest on the green. Lovely.

Seen a few folks do it. Not on purpose though :ooo:

Played yesterday in the morning, beautiful weather, frozen greens, after a few holes decided to forget any pretence of scoring and just practised hitting a normal shot, quiet entertaining really, awful score but hit some good shots, not for every week but a nice walk.

Yeah, we played this weekend like playing on concrete though and was more of a keep the swing grooved and move on exercise. Having said that had a good laugh and a nice winter walk rolled into one :)

played on saturday at 9, everything was frozen solid but it was good fun. impossible to play the par 3's and aporach shots. but putting was especially tough as the ball collected a ring of ice round it after 5 yards. but when the course thawed out a bit it wasnt that tough at all. at least it was sunny!!

We did nine holes on Friday afternoon , however with the cold coming in a thick fog came down and we couldn't see the flag on the last two holes, or where the ball went so it was hit and hope.

Played another 9 on Saturday afternoon however the course had just about thawed out and it was excellent as most people either had gone home or didn't bother so we had the course to ourselves.

I can't stand playing when the ground is frozen solid. Went to the range but that wasn't much fun either. My bottle of coke was icing over it was that cold. Might hibernate some more and wait for spring...as if!:)

Yeah. Played yesterday. Was fun overall but so hard to be consistent around greens. One chip would end up 1 foot from the hole, the next would bounce up and go right past the temporary green. Also putting is basically a guessing game. Another thing I find is that I thin it a lot more on frozen fairways.

I'll play in any conditions although I do feel slightly cheated playing on temps. It's good to get out and keep the swing in check and having a good laugh at some of the dodgy bounces but I'll be happy if I don't have to do it too often

I'd rather not go out at all and would rather hit some balls on the pracitce ground ideally or the range. Clubbing is a lottery and ther is no consistency to chipping. I don't let it worry me and accept the bad shots far more readily on a frozen course but I think its because I'm never really concentrating too hard anyway

Played 18 holes today, but I and the rest of my 4 ball never completed one hole. The course was too hard and all the greens were temporary ones. I won't be playing golf with frost on the ground again.

20 odd years ago I would play in any weather. I've played in freezing conditions before where you couldn't push a tee into the ground (even a wooden one) and after you had played an iron from the fairway you had to chip the ice from the club. Wouldn't even consider it nowadays. Total and utter waste of time.

I don't understand why anyone would say playing in frozen conditions messes with their game and head! We play in a whole host of different conditions all year round, frozen greens being just one.

Surely it's an ideal opportunity to sharpen up on certain aspects of your game. For me, because you cannot fly a ball into the green, it is a great chance to either sharpen up on distance control by landing irons just short of the green, or to try and improvise other shots.

Went out yesterday as it looked like the frost had gone and it didn't feel too cold. Wouldn't normally play on frozen ground and it was rock hard but I deceided to anyway.
Went through many greens but chipped and putted well and would have come off with around 34-36 points had I been able to finish - such slow play in front (3-ball, slooow single, 2 ball, 2-ball, 3 ball, me - 12 people playing/waiting on 1 1/2 holes) that I cut from 14 to 18 and played in. It took me longer to play the firat 4 holes on the back 9 as it did to play the whole of the front and noone was being let through - big surprise there....
Warmer but wetter tomorrow/thursday so it should be back to normal - including the slow play..
