Definitely not a Cheese Plant (Monstera Deliciosa)

Here's what I believe it is (note there's actualy a choice of 2!) - another extremely common house plant! Umbrella Plant! I can remember having both - and a Pheonix Palm, all of which got too big for the flat in Wellington!

Personally, I'd go for Euthenasia and replacement, but cutting it to 6" as Upsidedown suggested might prove less fatal, so possibly worth trying!
