Another Senior moment

I have done that and the other way round as well coming up well short. The thing I don't get is how the hell don't I notice when I am lining up the shot as the lofts are pretty different.

Not done that yet. I think because my six and nine use to sit close together in the bag it was a mistake waiting to happen. Changed the way I have the clubs in the bag to stop it happening again

Surely if you think you are hitting a 9 iron but it is actually a 6 you would notice when the club was behind the ball the difference in loft.

And I'm not having a go at anybody.

You would think, wouldn't you. When I read the Op's mistake I thought initially how could you not tell the difference between GW and 9 iron in address. Then I remembered doing the same with 6/9. I have no idea how I couldn't see it, but I didn't.

Embarrassing to say the least as it was the 18th and behind the green on a lovely summers day is the clubhouse/practice greens and many people sitting out with their drinks watching the action. Took a few seconds before I panicked with confusion as to why this ball was not coming down. All playing partners shouting four.......me froze in silence and just stunned (couldn't work out why the 9 iron was going this far). People scattering from the balcony and practice putting green......and the ball eventually came down behind the practice green, bounced once ran through the balcony doors into the lounge.

Yes it was a 6 iron. I will NEVER do it again (I check all the time) as I will never forget the embarrassment I felt that day. Needless to say my playing partners thought it funny as hell.

I hit a superb drive down our par 5 2nd last year. Put me well within range to go for it, about 180 out, so I pulled out my 5 iron.
Hit it as sweet as a nut, but came up short, bounced right and ended up in a greenside bunker. Took two to get out, and walked off with a bogey.
Couldn't understand it, I hit it well, so checked my bag.
Had accidentally pulled my 7 iron out and had hit that rather than my 5.
New bag, first time out with it, and the clubs were the "other way around" to usual.
I'd even unzipped the bloody head cover with a big 7 emblazoned on it!!
Won't make that mistake again.

You hit a drive and 7 iron green high on a par five ? Have you forgotten the three wood after the drive ?

In a medal on Sunday, my quite young 6 handicap fellow competitor completely air-mailed a pitch shot over a green and into some trees, and then said that he had accidentally pulled the wrong club out of his bag. I feel better now! ;)

I can't remember the last time I had a senior moment :confused::smirk:

I did it again during a match earlier this week! I had about 80 yards to the pin, pulled out what I thought was my Sand Iron, and hit a really crisp feeling shot which air-mailed not only the green but the next tee as well. Then found that I had actually used my 9-iron! :(

Don't worry Del, at your age I'd suggest to keep using the 9 iron and age will take care of reducing the distance hit eventually.

Just a tip for anyone that has a problem with hitting the wrong club. What I do is work out how far I've got left and then decide which club I need to hit to reach the green. Then I look in my bag and on the bottom of each club there is a number and each different number relates to a different distance that I hit each one. I then make sure that I choose the number that relates to the distance I want to hit the ball. The big number that is printed on the bottom of each club is the big clue as to what club it is.

You're welcome. :D
