I know this comes up all the time on here, but I have some questions that I need some answers/advice on.

The wife has decided that she wants a new kitchen, in organizing the finances she reckons we'll have enough funds left for me to treat myself to a new set of sticks. As much as I love the look of the Amps, I just can't bring myself to go to my local AG or anywhere nearby for fear that I won't get a good service and end up forking out a shed load of money on a set of sticks that don't suit me.

So, after a lot of thought, IF I go ahead with getting an overhaul of clubs I'm going to make the trip up to Gainsborough and get fitted for some Pings, be it G20's or I20's, handy as my wife's sister lives half an hour away from there so I can drop her and the kids off and then shoot down to Gainsborough for the fitting.

Anyway, I have some questions that I'm hoping someone can answer on here.

1) My swing isn't what I would call consistent, how do they fit you for sticks if you aren't swinging the same each time?

2) Lessons over the next year or two will tweak my swing to a degree so does that mean that in a years time my clubs will need refitting?

3) Does the stock price of a set of clubs get affected by your requirements in length, lie or shaft? For example, a set of G20's is £499 but what if I need a different type of shaft, does the price go up or down at all? This could be expensive if the shaft I require is an extra £20-£30 per club!

4) Once the fitting is done at Gainsborough do you walk out of the shop with your shiny new sticks or do you have to wait for them to send them to you?

Hope someone can shed some light on these issues.

1:You might be suprised at how consistent your swing is.

2: Maybe if you're working on significant swing changes, chat to your pro. He may be able and willing to tweak your clubs after the lessons as part of the package if they need altering (a couple of degrees either way is usuallly o.k though it does depend on the clubs. Ping used to do this for free after for British clubs, not sure if that's the case now.

3: Can vary, not sure of ping upgrade prices of the top of my head. With steel shafted irons (if that's what you're getting) I'd be suprised if you couldn't get something pretty suitable with no or relatively little upcharge.

4: Long time since I got fitted at Ping, (2 decades). I didn't walk out with them they got made up and sent out.

I like the advice above I'd be inclined to chat with your pro particuarly if you are having both lessons and buying from them. I'd still talk to them if just having a course of lessons. I think Wishon in one of books (he's a clubfitter) recommends waiting if you're emabarking on a serious course of lessons and practicing. I'd recommend his book search for the perfect club if you're thinking of purchasing equipment.

I can answer a couple of those for you, you can get your iron lies tweaked by Ping for free, you will have to use an official retail outlet and pay for p & p. It's unlikely you will need to change from reg to stiff etc so the shafts you get should do you for some time. There may be a charge for an upgrade on shafts say KBS or project X but this is not usually huge,Ping's CFS shaft is a very good shaft anyway.
Never been to Ping but they have to build them to your specs so I imagine they would send them to your local retail outlet (I think you have to book a fitting through them anyway)

Hope this helps

I can answer all these for you matey. I got my Irons from the Ping centre at Gainsborough and found the whole thing very good. Mine are G15's so it was recent when I went about 18 months ago I think.

1)As has been said you will be suprised how consistent your swing is good or bad!! If you hit a really bad shot, one that you rarely hit ask them to remove it from the analysis/results table.

2)Maybe/Maybe not. If so get you Pro to send them to Ping and they will do it for you FOC normally all you will have to pay is post charges.

3)Clubs will be whatever you Pro is selling them for RRP. If you have shaft upgrades then yes you will have to pay extra.

4)Nope you have to wait for them to be made. Mine took less than a week. They send them to you Pro shop or retail outlet if you buy them from there. All you have to do is collect them. Again there was no postage charge for this.

Hope this helps

So I don't actually phone the fitting centre to book a session then?

No you have to go through an official Ping retailer such as you Pro shop or a high street shop. They ring up and arrange the fitting for you. Once that is done your Pro will let you know the appointment date and all you have to do is turn up.Thats how it worked when I went. They started doing this at Ping as people were ringing up booking appointments and not turning up or just using it as a fun day out with no intention of buying. Decide where you want to buy the clubs from Pro Shop/American Golf etc and get them to book you in and enjoy it as it's great.

As we don't have a pro shop at our club I'm guessing I'll have to go via American Golf......what's the betting they try and persuade me to have a fitting in store on their crappy simulator that adds 20 yards to every shot and tells you that you hit it dead straight every time! I hate that machine.

I would try and avoid AG and the likes if you can. See you are in Essex must be a Pro Shop near to you that is a Ping Retailer. These are the ones on Pings website that are in Essex perhaps go and see one of these?

Good luck anyway whichever route you choose to go down. It is a real minefield when thinking about new clubs, I tried loads of Makes and models and found that between the final few there was hardly any difference so went for the Pings as their fitting centre is only 30 mins from where I live.
